I'm joining Costco tomorrow night after work! What are your favorite food items and why?

Sandy, I buy my meat at Costsco, it's the best! They put out fresh meat every day and

it's also USDA choice, most grocery stores carry "select". Their roasts and pork are wonderful, I've never purchased a bad piece of meat at Costco. The fruit is good, especially strawberries. I also buy butter, keeping the packages I don't need in the freezer. It's a great place to shop for appetizers in the frozen section when entertaining. I also purchase vitamins, smoked almonds, books and beautiful fresh flowers. I love Costco and have been a member for 6 years.

They have frozen haricot verts that are VERY good.

Their Kirkland brand olive oil is delicious--Tuscan and from last December's harvest. Their other olive oil (in half gallon bottles) is also good. The Kirkland brand Starbucks coffee is excellent--grind it fine. All kinds of cheeses are an excellent buy--Saga blue is $4.49/half pound package. The tomato bruschetta topping is delicious--served on their Italian toasts. Mesclun mix. Pork butts--but right now, not such a good buy for some reason. Beautiful racks of lamb. Good wine prices. Books. Printer ink. Oster blender on sale right now. Flowers. Frozen shrimp. Crab meat in the meat cold case.

see if they have tomato shakes...

finely chopped sundried tomatoes and very convenient. just ignore the instructions to regrigerate - they keep forever on the shelf and rot in the fridge.

Big bags of onions, shallots ans garlic, If they sprout before you use them all...

you still come out ahead pricewise. Assorted bell peppers, mini bell peppers, fresh asparagus--all the veggies are good. I bought a case of navel oranges for a party that were out of this world--I wish I could do that more often but they'd go to waste.

I love the cases of Ziplock bags and paper towels. And the meat is as good as everyone says.

I'm one of those wierdos who prefers canned peas to frozen, and they have them in 8-can cases. When they have anchovies in 6-can packs I grab several. (I'm one of those wierdos too.)

My staples from Costo:

Paper products (towels/plates/napkins/TP)
Foil & Cling Wrap
Meats
Fresh Fruit (apples and pears are favs)
Fresh veggies (organic baby carrots & salad mixes)
Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans
Organic Milk
Organic Butter (they don't always have it)
Bread/English Muffins/Bagels (store the extra in the freezer)
Olive Oil
Canned veggies (we like green beans)
Maple Syrup
Rotisserie Chickens
Ready to heat soups (usually near the meat section in the refrigerated case -lobster bisque and mushroom barley are really great)
Prepared Salads (Cobb/Ceasar)
Cheese (parmigiano reggiano/extra sharp cheddar/fresh mozarella)
Cleaning products
Laundry Detergent
Clothing
Computer Supplies (paper/ink/CD/DVD)

Clothing---nothing made my DH happier than to be able to buy clothes at Costco after losing weight.

I buy a lot of DH's clothes there, too! I tease him about "Fashions by Costco", but they do

have nice things at great prices.

Coming from my foodie friends… I knew you’d be a wealth of good information!

I’ve printed your recommendations and they are greatly appreciated!!

3-lb bags of raw almonds--I toast them myself for a healthy snack. The big bags of dried blueberries

are really good too. We like the multi-can packs of albacore tuna in water. If you're making salad for a crowd, the big bags of prewashed spinach are great. I can never use it all before it goes bad. I buy a huge bag of jasmine rice once a year.

Also kid foods: Mac & cheese, fruit roll-ups, big boxes of Cheerios (a staple at our house).

Faves & What NOT to buy....

I LOVE Costco and have only been disappointed in a very few things - mattress set being the main one I can think of!

FAVES besdies what everyone else listed because they got a lot of what I get:
Seafood both fresh and frozen
Prepared Greek salad
Chicken salad in the refrigerated section with the cheeses
Kirkland brand spiral sliced ham!!!!!!
All the cheeses - particularly their gorgonzola, Cabot cheeses, Tillamook cheedar, parmesan, brie
Romaine lettuce - 6 hearts for what 3 cost at the grocery
celery hearts
frozen chicken tenders & breasts
Tequila lime chicken wings (frozen)
Wings of fire (frozen)
Le Petite Francais (or something like that) frozen loaves of bread - yummy and great for bruchetta
special occassion cakes & chocolate cake from bakery
COOKBOOKS
herbs & spices
ARTICHOKE HEARTS - great big gallon jar of marinated hearts for about $6 - throw them in everything
frozen mixed berry blend - for
smoothies, ice cream topping
olive tapenade (fresh refrigerated cases)
Nuts
Brown sugar & powdered sugar
Kirkland brand pomagranite juice (much cheaper than others)
Land o lakes Heavy cream
Kirkland bacon

You really can't go wrong and they guarantee your satisfaction so if you don't like it, take it back. They have become my friends and they have told me to bring things back if I wasn't satisfied - I just hate lugging back that mattress & box spring set so I guess I live with that mistake.

Funny about the mattress. We bought one of those cushy foam toppers and it never did puff up

all the way like it was supposed to. We took it back(no way could we put it back in the box) and they gave us another to try no questions asked and the second one puffed up just fine. But you should have seen me lugging that thing into the store.

The most important thing to know about Costco is that if you think it's a good price

and it's something you think you might use, err on buying it (particularly because they have such a phenomenal return policy). Sometimes they switch suppliers or discontinue carrying something. They no longer carry my Aidell's sundried tomato sausages, McCormick's red pepper flakes (in the big huge bottle) and frozen green beans (which were fabulous). I now buy my frozen green beans at Trader Joe's.

My kids are addicted to cheese sticks and my Costco was out for two months and my grocery store charged twice the price for the same brand. So the next time I saw them I grabbed two big bags (checking expiration dates).

They also carry -- on a seasonal basis -- nice bath stuff gift baskets (which we buy for teachers at my children's school for the holidays)and novelty chocolates.

I don't know if people mentioned this already, but the prices on milk, eggs and especially heavy whipping cream is significantly cheaper than my grocery. They also sell stamps cheaper than the post office (how is that possible?!).

Last but not least, we stock up on diapers/wipes/Pull-Ups.

I know someone who always buys two roasted chickens when she

goes to Costco. One to eat that night and one to freeze. She swears it defrosts fine, but I haven't tried it yet.

I have boasted probably too many times about

the clothes that I have bought from Costco! Right now I am wearing a pair of (hang on I have to check) Calvin Kline (sp? I'm not going to check again!) cropped jeans that I love! My most recent clothing purchase was a little black top that I need to keep for special occasions...
Anyway, it's hit or miss with clothes.

My staples are the beef tenderloin, definitely the pesto; now, thanks to Durward, the bruschetta, the dried tomatoes in oil, lemons, chicken, dog food(the kirkland brand, as the ingredients are great- the lamb kind),
the occasional paperback...
sorry, the list goes on

More faves & tip to buy quick on seasonal one time purchases.

They get great one time only things that sometimes literally disappear in hours - Fitz & Floyd serving pieces that I would NEVER pay full price for. Or one of my best buys yet - a set of two hammered copper trays (yes real copper and heavy) one huge oblong and one square - $20something dollars. Or nice basket sets (2 to 4 pieces) for $15-$20 that I use to put gifts in.

Their Kirkland wine glasses are VERY nice - right now they only have a balloon shape and I need more of the basic large ones but it's like $25 for a set of 8 and I swear I can't tell the difference between them and the Riedel.

My non-stick anodized cookware is the Kirkland brand and I have loved it and I am eyeing the stainless set with the copper core bottom. I have purchased several VERY nice stainless steel pans that were by Tramontina there that I am extremely satisfied with.

Nice ceramics and I've been very happy with the Hampton Forge flatware - very heavy, nice feel to them.

Bought my digital video camera there and will probably buy my next digital camera there - their price on the Canon Rebel is about $100 less than anywhere else I have seen it.

When we were in England our first time, I had a list of all the Costco's and it wound up that we needed to make a stop our first day out of London so we went to the one in Reading. Hubby had bought one pair of shoes only and they were killing his feet so he bought a pair of Kirkland brand tennis shoes (about $13) and sworn by them since. Their men's women leather loafers rival Cole Haan (I used to sell upscale shoes so trust me, these were NICE quality leather and workmanship).

And don't forget the prescriptions - my mom was shocked how much cheaper they were than Walgreen's and my pharmacy staff here are the greatest - they really take care of me. In fact, all the Costco staff is friendly and wonderful. I've only seen one or two unfriendly grumps and you know what, they don't last long.
