Oui Madame. La voici. REC: Red Velvet Cake..........an ancient recipe but it works
I used to make this when I was a kid. Many decades (score, in fact) ago. It has a terrific texture and oh, what a colour. YOu have to use Crisco though.
1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. white sugar
2 eggs
2 t. cocoa
1 t. vanilla
1/4 c. (2 oz.) red food colouring
1 t. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 t. vinegar
1 t. baking soda
2 1/2 c. cake flour
Cream Crisco and sugar; add eggs one at a time, continuing to beat.
Make paste with cocoa and colour and add to Crisco.
Add salt & vanilla to buttermilk. Add gradually to Crisco mixture, alternating with flour.
Mix vinegar and soda and add.
Bakes 2 - 9" layers. 350 degrees. 30-40 min.
Icing:
1 c. milk
5 T. flour (Tablespoons)
1 c. butter
1 - 2 c. icing sugar
Make paste with flour and some milk. Add remaining milk. Cook until thick, beating continuously.
Cool well.
Cream butter and sugar. Add milk mixture. Beat well.
