OK, I have had a response from Nestle on the chocolate chips...
They claim the recipe has not changed and I must have had a bad bag (for the past 4 years or so).
They are not the same. Something has changed.
Similarly, I got into an exchange with Caswell-Massey about the change in one of their men's scent lines--Greenbriar. I loved this scent and ordered some more product when my supply finally ran out (gifts, etc. so that I hadn't ordered it in a couple years). The new Greenbriar cologne was a totally different formula. I hated it. I contacted C-M and was actually taunted by the representative after she finally admitted the formula had been "updated" and that I hadn't noticed in all these years, so there must not have been anything "wrong" with it. No, I had been using original product and when I finally did open a new bottle, it was quite startling going from the old formula to the new. It is amazing to me that companies can change the formulas of old favorites and think no one should notice, or have a problem with the new formula.
Bottom line, regardless of what Nestle is saying, the formula for the semi-sweet chocolate chips has changed and not for the better. I truly think they've substituted a cheaper fat for some of the cocoa butter.
