Is there a better smell than a big pot of applesauce cooking? Gala apples are .98/lb, which is as

good as it gets up here. I took out the apple peeler/slicer/corer thingy that I have never used and gave it a whirl. I have some practicing to do still. not the nicest slices, but I had a beautiful pot of apples for the crockpot to simmer overnight in a bit of cider and touch of brown sugar/cinnamon. I can't wait to have some with vanilla yogurt tonight. I love the autumn! I have to check our Super Walmart. they often get in even cheaper produce by the bag, which would be fine for the applesauce. My dog was happy happy with the apple ends. crunch crunch.

My apples turned to mush when I tried that. So I just peeled the old-fashioned way.

Felt so nice to make applesauce, though! I will definitely do that again.

Ang, just make sure he doesn't eat the seeds... they have trace amounts of arsenic in them

And NO, there is no better smell ;o)

If it's any consolation to you, apples here at Walmart are $1.25 and $1.00 per pound! About $1.00 per pound at the farm stands, and 70-80 cents per pound when you pick them yourself.

I have to wear gloves to peel so many apples---my hands itch like crazy. raw apples w/peel is one

of my allergy triggers---if I eat them raw. but I have found that they also make my hands itch, so this gizmo helped out quite a bit. Once it's cooked, I'm fine.

I too love the smell of applesauce, it makes the whole house smell wonderful! And, you can cook the

apples with the peel on. When they are soft enough turn them through the food mill. It works really well and I love the rosy color that the Jonathan apples give to the sauce.

I just saw 3 lbs for $1.19 at Aldi's and 6 apples for $1 at the local dollar store

Sorry to burst your bubble

Guess it's the season. Just canned a batch yesterday. Used 5 different kinds of apples (and . . .

my secret ingredient, a couple of bartlett pears. Smooths out all the flavors.)

I have to admit I used "Martha's" recipe, picked up years ago. It's just terrific. Uses cinnamon sticks AND vanilla pods. Not overly sweet, really apple-y.

Thanks for that recipe, Steve. I used it last week and liked it a lot.

Loved all the spices.

The applesauce is for the baby, so I left out the peel (although I guess I could have put it all through the food processor).

we just got back from the annual vet visit, and I asked her about some of the "poison" foods,

She said avocados were perfectly fine, in moderation and if their liver is OK. Also potatoes. She laughed when I mentioned potatoes because it's the diet they put dogs on when they suffer from allergies or tummy upset. just to watch out for raw potatoes that have turned green. She said the main foods they warn about are grapes and macadamia nuts. I didn't give the dog the apple core---just the ends of the apples that didn't peel or slice well.

I didn't ask about those---I know chocolate can upset the system and be toxic in small dogs.

I don't ever give her onions, so they didn't come to mind. Our friend's weimeraner ate a whole round of Panamanian dark chocolate---about half a pound of it I think and lived to bark again---but had a mighty upset tummy for a few days.

BTW, our cats love potatoes, corn, and pizza sauce!

And expensive Fancy Feast canned food, Science Diet Hairball dry food, roast turkey, roast beef (only if shaved thin), but no, they aren't spoiled...
