I made the trail mix today. Instead of using so many pretzels, I added a 14 oz

bag of Chex Sweet and Salty (Honey Nut) Trail Mix, and some Kashi Go-Lean cereal. Then after it cooled I added 2 bags of Baker's Semi Sweet Chocolate Chunks. (that's what I had available in my pantry) The chocolate made ALL the difference - we love it in this! Made a great balance with the sweet and salty flavors coating the other ingredients. Yum.

Thanks for the recipe, which I have posted here:

We had a bake sale a couple of weeks ago, so I made this and bagged it in cello bags tied with a pretty ribbon. They sold out smileys/smile.gif

I also made another batch for my son's school function, and hubby asked me to make another batch for his co-workers for Halloween.

Can you tell we love these? They're easy - like making chex mix, but it's something different. I just buy everything from Costco, the nuts, the cranberries, and the pretzels. Sometimes I'll do all pecans, and no almonds. The costco bag of pretzels is 6 lbs, so we just eat those plain. by Debbie/NJ

Enjoy!

SUGARED CRANBERRY TRAIL MIX

1 4 lb. bag of pretzels

4 cups of almonds (1/2 of a 2 lb. bag)

4 cups of pecans (1/2 of a 2 lb. bag)

4 cups (1/2 of a 30 oz. bag) dried cranberries

8 large egg whites (about 1 cup)

4 cups white sugar

6 tablespoons cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350º. Spread pecans and almonds evenly on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until nuts are slightly darker in color. Cool completely on pan.

Reduce oven temperature to 225º.

In two large foil pans, combine the pecans, almonds, pretzels, and cranberries.

In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until foamy. Pour over pretzel mixture; toss until well coated. In another small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over pretzel mixture; toss until well coated. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely in pan. Store in an airtight container

Sorry Sandy in Hawaii!! Copy and pasted that wrong! smileys/smile.gif

I think the original recipe was from Debbie but I know you posted it here recently. Oops!

Sorry to be so confusing!

Re: I'm confused ....

and I have these on my list to make for the holiday season. Should I be using the four lb bag of pretzels? I don't have the other cereals suggested - by Gayle - will follow the original recipe. Thanks
Betty

Sorry emtd... There was a thread about it where I had stated that...

my family wasn't particularly fond of loads of pretzels in trail mix so I was trying to find something else to add instead of as many pretzels. That's all.

Go ahead and make the recipe! It's great! But, like any recipe, feel free to tweak it to your own family's likes. smileys/smile.gif

I do think the chocolate added a lot of depth. You might try a handful tossed in a small amount of the mix to try it out. Just make sure it is completely cool first. I thought mine was - but underneath, a few chunks got melty. I HAD to pick those out and eat them! smileys/smile.gif

Sorry for the confusion!

Re: thanks for the clarification .... I'm easily confused obviously...

I will try the chocolate as well, thanks.

So glad you enjoyed it and Debbie deserves the credit smileys/smile.gif

I never woulda thought of adding chocolate, but it sure sounds good! I'm going to make a batch this week to sell at a craft fair, and I'll certainly add some chocolate to this batch. Love the idea!

I just saw a trail mix thing in the Sur La Table catalog - pistachios, dried cranberries, dried cherries, and milk chocolate covered cherries. It was just a plain mix of fruit and nuts, no added flavorings, but the chocolate covered cherries sounded like a great addition.

Chocolate chunks or chocolate-covered-fruity-things - either one sounds good as an addition to this Sugared Cranberry mix.

Thanks for a great idea!!! I think I'll steal that as well smileys/smile.gif Isn't it great how recipes EVOLVE??

Now that it's Debbie/Sandi/Gayle's trail mix, shall we add it to T&T?

I love those mixes that have chocolate and candies in them...

like the Harvest Mix (candy corns and pumpkins) with M&M's and peanuts or mixed nuts, so the chocolate was a natural for me with the sweet/salty. But, I think someone on here suggested it, too. Can't remember who, sorry!

My granddaughter LOVED this last night! I mostly picked out the craisins, chex and pretzels for her - no chocolate. (she discovered chocolate this fall! LOVES IT)
