Gay--this was our family birthday cake for all birthdays(except I liked lemon cake)
It's a beautiful cake and quite easy to make. basically take your favorite vanilla cake recipe(not too fluffy, more sturdy cake)and bake in a bundt pan. split into 3 layers. make a buttercream(German's like to use a pudding/butter mix for the icing/filling) and then spread some red jam on the layers and then some of the buttercream, then ice the whole thing with the rest of the buttercream. make a "krokant" which is just some glazed almonds or other favorite nut and press those on the outside of the cake. My Mom always used sliced almonds. decorate with red cherries on the top. this cake is great to make several days ahead as it ages well and gets better.
