I am now on the library board for our small town and in April, the library will hold a luncheon for 35 volunteers.

I've been asked to make a 1/2 sheet cake for the event.

Here's what I know.

Theme: Volunteers are Golden

Library is using "gold coins" on the table.

Library is using fresh marigold flowers on the table.

I have the names of all the volunteers.

I've thought of making the half sheet (already asked to make that 1/2 chocolate & 1/2 white) into an open book with Volunteers are Golden written across it.

Or...putting an edible photo of Treasure Island and a tiny trunk filled with gold coins falling out of it.

Or...making a 40-cupcake tree with marigold icing and each of the volunteer names on a wire flower.

Then I got stuck and ran out of ideas. Need more inspiration as I've never done ANY of the above.

You also might do something using edible glitter. They have a yellow one, or you could dust the

white over yellow frosting. I've used this stuff & it is pretty.

If it's at all related to children's lit, maybe work in a Little Golden Books theme?

I love the cupcakes idea!

I'm thinking GBH replica of the Library would be perfect : ) ((Don't hit me!! I'm ducking!))

Awww barb, do I look like I'm

offended? I know it's a figure of speech with you humanoids. I just get my feathers ruffled when I see duck recipes - that's when I get all quacked out of shape!

Since they asked for a cake, why not make the book cake? Very cute idea. Also goldfish

(real or plastic) in fishbowls would be cute. I helped a friend plan her parents' 50th birthday recently and that was one idea that I remember.

I'll try and remember some more, but as far as the cake goes, I'd definately go with the book idea. With maybe royal icing or fondant marigold flower clusters somewhere on the cake.

Thanks everyone! I'm going with the 1/2 sheet AND cupcakes! They asked for

chocolate and white for the sheet cake, so I'll make carrotcake cupcakes and tint the creamcheese icing marigold color, piping the icing to simulate marigolds.

Then I'll sprinkle on some gold dust. I've always wanted to channel Carol Kane's "Ghost of Christmas Present" dusting Bill Murray with glitter right before clocking him.
