Every year, my college (St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland) plays a croquet game against the Naval Academy, which is across the street. This is a long-standing tradition and apparently it's quite a dressy affair--everyone dresses in period clothing (or as close as they can get), brings a picnic, and cheers on their respective team. I hear it's all very Great Gatsby/Downton Abbey.

I've never been to this event (side note: my college has two campuses--the one in Annapolis and one in Santa Fe; I went to the one in Santa Fe), but we're going this year because a couple of friends are getting married before the croquet game and the game will be their reception. Also, my husband's cousin is a Naval Academy graduate and he's always wanted to go so we're going to meet up with his family there.

So I need to bring a picnic. Given the event, I'm thinking egg salad sandwiches, those salmon canapes someone posted recently, perhaps a sliced pork tenderloin (for the men in the party). Whatever I bring needs to be able to sit in a cooler during the ceremony.

With all the snow on the ground, I'm not quite in picnic mode and am having trouble thinking of other things to bring. (It's at the end of April; I'm just trying to plan ahead a bit.) Any ideas? Perhaps I'll go peruse the menu section, too.

How about

thermos of a hearty wild rice and mushroom soup
dark bread and butter
cheese, olives, pickles
lots of wool blankets

Last night my son threw together a lovely idea that might be good for you.

Ground beef-tehina-eggplant "sandwiches".

He browned ground beef with onion and one or two canned
tomatoes (just for a bit of flavor), whichever herbs you like.
Then he grilled an eggplant. (you could do it on the stove
top if you have gas or in the oven).
Finally he got some tehina.
He layered - eggplant, tehina, beef and baked in the oven.
He then opened small pitas that he had made,
filled them.
Pita would not be good for you since it can get soggy, but
you could use a sturdy roll. It is just as good cold as warm.

Just a different idea.

Hi Amanda, so nice to see you.

The end of April makes me think of things like sliced ham with little rolls, asparagus vinaigrette, deviled eggs, strawberries & angel food or poundcake.

Hi Amanda! How are you doing? You have to have tea, and wear a frilly hat! Other ideas might be

English cheeses and crackers
cucumber/salmon/cream cheese sandwiches
chicken salad with tarragon
strawberry shortcake with clotted cream?
hot hand-held meat pies ("pasties" in the UK - but don't google this!! ;o))
