I received mine as a gift, and so far have only used in in soups -
and I love it, as I hate dragging out my standing blender to puree the soup. It is a pain to clean, and I invariably put too much in and it splurts out of the lid and makes a huge mess. Grrr..
I might not have purchased it myself, but it is a handy tool to have in the kitchen.

Hollandaise and mayo are easy with the hand blender, plus
there's a great recipe out there for ginger pear chicken over soba noodles (a summer dish) and the stick blender is perfect for making the marinade/dressing. Also I made Mexican hot cocoa last weekend and used the stick blender to get it all frothy - mmmm! I think I'm on my 6th one now!
