ISO: ISO: Sugar or Butter Cookie Recipe for Heart (Cookie Cutter) Cookies - next Girls Group Project

My next project for Girls Group isn't so much a cooking class as much as a cookie-decorating class. Instead of a Valentines Party (because the organization doesn't want to emphasize couples and doesn't want girls that don't have a boyfriend to feel left out) my sister, Boo, and I are going to sponsor a 'Love Yourself' party. I'm going to make a lot of heart shaped cookies a head of time and then bring a slew of decorating frostings/glazes/gels/sprinkles/edible pens/etc.

Anyway - I was trying to cheat and use storebought sugar cookie dough. However, I tried it out today and all of my heart cut-outs puffed and lost their heart shape. So can anyone provide me with a recipe that doesn't 'grow' when you bake it?

And a special 'thanks' to Pat-NoCal who sent me a slew of beautiful cooking utensils (whisks, measuring spoons, tongs, etc.) for the girls. I'm going to wrap each one in a red bow - there's enough for each girl to receive one of these shiny, new tools. They'll love them! Thank you, Pat!

Thanks,

Deb

Deb here is my favorite cutout cookie recipe...

It is from a cookie cutter artist that always attends one of our local craft fairs. He used to make a little brochure with a few recipes. My brochure is dated 1991 and that is how long I have been making these cookies. There is no title, the instructions are just written in amongst the text.
It is a very easy dough to work with and does not need to be chilled prior to cutting out.

1 C unsalted butter
1 C sugar
1 egg
1 T milk
2 t baking powder
3 1/2 C four
1/2 t vanilla*
1/4 t almond extract*

Preheat the oven to 325°F.

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, milk and extracts, mix well. Add the baking powder and flour a bit at a time. Divide the dough and roll to 1/8" on a floured board. Make cutouts. Bake on a parchment lined sheet 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Decorate as desired.

*these are my additions to the ingredients

What a great idea for your group. I would think your theme would promote healthy doses of self esteem and confidence. The girls are certainly lucky to have you (and your sis!) to work with them. Please let us know how it goes and if we can help with anything else! Good luck smileys/smile.gif

one suggestion is to cut out the center of some of the hearts with a smaller heart and then they can

sandwich 2 together with some jam.

Glad you posted a icing recipe too - I can really use one!

Does it harden enough that the girls can transport them without the icing messing up? (So not rockhard like royal - but hard enough to set)?

Thank you - and for your suggestion below!

Deb

Yes, it gets "hard" in just a few minutes, so decorate only a few at a time so the sprinkles stick.

But it's not rock hard like royal icing can get and quite easy to make. I think I added some almond extract for just a hint of flavor. I actually used up the last of it last night. It kept well in a plastic container. I just zapped it a few seconds in the microwave to make it a bit runnier.

I also made the dough ahead and refrigerated it. the chilled dough keeps shape better, and

if you use the dough right away, make a test cookie to see if you may need a bit more flour if the shape spreads too much. Just knead some in, or chill the cut out cookies a bit on the cookie sheet(I set them on the back porch)before baking.
