I've been away and just read the news about Meryl. Just tragic.

Personally, I hate being taken by surprise. This is a terrific strategy for a number of situations.

I think the "surprise" element puts people on the defensive, warranted or not. Having time for both parties to formulate their thoughts leads to a more productive conversation for both parties.

 
I talked to my mom this week and she says

she's depressed, which of course is so very natural being a widow with 2 injured grown daughters and all of that. She was seeing her doctor and I'm going to write him a letter and fax it. that is a great idea.

She's been reviewing all the paperwork I sent over and promised we will have a family conversation about her wishes when we next see each other again. I hope that's soon.
