I use mine ALL the time & just store on the top of the bowl, beater most used...
inside and plastic lid-(yes, get one of those for each bowl you own)
The shield I own is an older one, only one part which is a bit of a hassle to attach (the beater must be in the bowl first but not locked to the drive)
The newer shields are 2-part hinged and easier to put on & off.
