Last weekend we had a family feast…

The fun started a couple of months ago when I ran into my nephew in law, a former chef, and showed him this deal I was looking at for Wagyu tomahawk steaks. I don’t have a grill so I asked are you willing to take this on? He’s like I’m game if you’re game. it was just a spur of the moment decision and I ordered all this meat. The end result was last weekend - we all pitched in to the menu, he cooked everything and it was one of the most delicious meals I’ve had in ages.

The menu;

Appetizers; heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese and balsamic; cream cheese with pepper jelly studded with edible flowers; shrimp cocktail.

Beverage for appetizer course: Prosecco

Cocktails before dinner; dirty martinis with garlic stuffed olives

Salad course: spears of Romaine with Caesar dressing and homemade croutons

Main course: roasted asparagus & mushrooms, risotto, garlic infused creamed mashed potatoes, freshly shucked cream corn. Butter soaked lobster tails on the mesquite Grill, and reverse seared charcoal spice rubbed Wagyu tomahawk steaks with herb and garlic compound butter.

Wine: Reds from my grand niece’s wine club @ $140! per bottle. Delicious!

Dessert: chocolate beignets and cheesecake with more prosecco. We closed the night out with old-fashioned cocktails which if I drank all of I would’ve had a massive hangover the next day so it only took sips.

My niece and nephew in law who used to own a catering company brought out all the stops with china, crystal, multiple glassware courses, cotton linens on the table. flowers, candles, and cute little portable lamps all set up poolside.

Ooooh overloaded but still contented stomachs. I've never heard of charcoal spice rub. There sure is a lot of it. How many people shared one of the steaks?

That rub came with the steaks, so we tried it and it was great. Instructions said to spread it on heavy. We had nine people with 2 66oz and 1 48oz steaks, of course we had the lobster too, but there was leftover steak w sides for another meal. The steaks were done in the oven to ensure precise cooking temp (they were very thick!) and reverse seared over mesquite on the grill to finish them off.

Here is the seasoning so you can see what’s in it.

Oh, looks and sounds amazing!
We are having a family lunch at my place at the end of the month, but half of us will be children under twelve, so nothing like your feast.

lana, does this mean (gasp!) you have a working kitchen finally??
Yes!! I still don't have my pantry cupboards installed, but the rest is finished, and DH and I are working on a tile table using leftover tiles from the backsplash. I am so thrilled with it - many won't like it as it's all shiny white, but everything keeps clean with just a wipe down! Except the floor - we made a big mistake there, and it's harder to keep clean, but still much easier than my former tiles with all the nooks and crannies that trapped dirt and needed to be scrubbed. I have been 3D printing drawer inserts in a lovely sky blue to tone with my backsplash - such fun! If you're interested, you can see the video I sent my family. I'm still figuring out where things belong, so it's a work in progress. DH is going to rebuild the pantry cupboards and make the lower shelves into drawers.

well...damn girl, that is one amazing kitchen! I love how everything has its own spot.

You do realize you'll have to draw up a map for visiting family/friends so they can find where the garbage/booze is beautifully hidden without having to open every cabinet.

LOL, what a great idea! Thank you! As a very untidy person, I am thrilled at seeing what a difference good organization makes.

Wow, so much space and so well organized…it’s fabulous! You must be so thrilled to have such a great space. I love all the custom inserts!

I am thrilled, it makes cooking so much easier. And DD was able to spread out a whole tissue sewing pattern on the peninsula, to trace what she needed, also such a luxury. Now I need to 3D print organizers for my desk drawers, which are a disgraceful mess.

A bunch of thinking went into that gorgeous kitchen. I am envious of those pull-out, swing-around, pull-out-again shelves. When I was renovating a house (to live in) in 1976, I put in all white. Unheard of then. People thought I was a bit nuts but later loved it. I would choose white every time. ANd such a bonus to be able to cut out a pattern in one spot!!

That black panel to the left of the stove....is that a monitor?

DH was not all all inclined to get an IKEA kitchen until he saw the swing out shelves in the corner cupboards - changed his mind in an instant! And yes, he used to be a draughtsman in his youth, so we went through several iterations of drawings to reach the final design.
Actually, the black panel is an optical illusion - it's empty space, but you can see a laptop screen from the room behind, which gives the wrong impression. We don't have cable any more, so have a laptop attached to the TV which helps with streaming, and it's always on, even when the TV is off.
