Lighting Bugs...

We seem to be having an exceptional year(in Missouri)

The trees are just covered-quiet fireworks.

Oh, this thread is making me so nostalgic! I haven't seen lightning bugs in over 15 years....

Western Washington must be too wet.

15 years? How about 50? In the late 1940's and early '50's, I was a child in the new suburbs of

Long Island, NY. This was the first home my parents had ever owned. The backyard was FILLED with Lightning Bugs, and we would sit outside in our wonderful 100' X 50' backyard and we would catch them up in big Mason jars. We (my kid brother and me) would watch them glisten and glow in the jars, and of course we would turn them loose when we went inside, to go to bed.

I have lived in several places in the US since then, but I haven't seen lightning bugs ever since then. Yes, this is nostalgic...where did they go?

I'll post a picture when I find my adapter, because I wouldn't believe it if

if I hadn't have just seen it. I was out in the backyard getting some compost to fill a window box tomorrow and I noticed little green flourescent beads in the compost I was picking up in my hands to put in the box. Huh? Fluorescent compost? I brought some inside, to the light, and there were larvae in the compost, and they must've been firefly larvae, glowing bright green.

Hey! Are these glow-worms? I have never seen this before - glowing beads in my compost, tiny little eggplants, and families picking grape leaves on the interstate, all within a few hours. Yes, Marilyn, I think the Apocolypse might be near... ;o)
