Looking for ideas for a family reunion potluck...

A "type" of Fattoush salad with pita crisps and lemony dressing

but with all kinds of ripe, luscious fresh veggies, in addition to standard ingredients. Have portions bagged and add to huge (gorgeous) bowl as salad disappears (bring 2-3 sets of serving utensils). Cut the awesome, ripe tomatoes and add right there. Bring home bagged leftovers or share "portions" and dressing recipe cards with relatives.

Even the meat and potato crowd knows they need more fresh veggies - this will be a star! Simple, outstanding food! Colleen

A detour....

Talked to my sister tonight and she is not bringing the "sacred" beef and noodles that is my dad's favorite food (as she usually does).

I don't like the way she makes them, she buys store bought frozen Reese noodles that pass off as "homemade". The family (on my grandmother's German side, thank you) recipe is big fat handcut fresh egg noodles tossed into the broth with the beef roasts that have been cooked into oblivion in a broth of onions, carrots, and celery. Last couple times I've made them I've had more noodles than my Dad likes. He likes a juicy gravy around his noodles and beef.

"Your noodles are too dry" he said.

So I will do the beef and noodles.

And I will buy a lot of extra carcasses to boil down to make rich stock and douse my noodles should I make too many noodles for the broth.

It will be juicy.

The other entrants: Homemade peach pie (my dad's fav--although I'm praying I can get peaches that will be ok), chess pie, chocolate chess pie (it's a local thing that even I as a chocolate fiend do not get. Chess pie is chess pie)...

And for my own sanity and well-being...a Great Big casserole of chicken enchiladas, smothered in New Mex and Chipotle sauce, stuffed with cilantro, onion, garlic, and Asiago, smothered with more Asiago, and served with bowls of sour cream, cilantro, and lime wedges. I know the wife of my cousin from Ecuador (the wife, not the cousein, of course) will appreciate those.

And I will be happy making everyone happy.

When we're finished, we're taking our Munchkin down the street for her first visit to the Great Serpent Mound.
