Meet Cherry my new KA mixer!

Meet Cherry. She just got here from eBay and though I didn’t want a red mixer w my vintage pink appliances, she’s doing her best to fit right in. She comes with the added bonus of three pasta rollers, one for spaghetti, one for fettuccine, and one for flat like lasagna. So I guess I’m going to need a good recipe for that.

She is the incredibly difficult to find proline 7 qt that’s been discontinued, but it has the big commercial 8qt dc motor in it. So these are scarce to find and since I needed a bigger bowl because I can’t make Swiss meringue buttercream in the smaller bowl without it fighting me, and Marilyn confirmed my 5 qt size was the issue, I’ve had my eye out for one of these for quite a while. Her official ka color is candy apple red.

While, she came with the three KitchenAid pasta attachments, which I must say are quite pretty and have the name of the pasta engraved in script on them, it only came with the stainless steel wire whip. So I’ve ordered the stainless steel nsf certified flat beater, and dough hook direct from ka as they were on sale for 20% off and everyone was selling the actual ka brand at the same price.

I really want to use her right away, but can’t really think what I could make with just the wire whip. I was going to come in here and ask you to help me name her but as soon as I thought, what should I name you Cherry immediately popped into my mind so, I guess she told me her name. I’m super excited to get her!

Those rollers are beauties! Is that by any chance, a stainless whip? I hope the two of you enjoy and long and happy relationship. Her presence will not be easy to overlook.

Yes, the whip is stainless 👏 so can go in the dishwasher! I don’t know why the pro line didn’t come with a stainless beater and dough hook, so I would’ve upgraded it anyway, because those ceramic coated ones end up chipping.

I managed to find a flex beater in stock that will arrive tomorrow. The stainless beater and hook won’t get here till Thursday and I couldn’t wait! The rollers are really beautiful, marked made in Italy and look unused. Now you can get all 3 cutters in one unit. I saw it at Costco yesterday, but it wasn’t all stainless like these. I didn’t open the box, but the color looked gray in the photo.

(I could’ve drove 30 miles each way to get the flex beater today, I didn’t bc I just paid $6! a gallon for gas at Costco - cheapest in town and up .50 from a week and 1/2 ago. This is also how I found out apparently the 2 sur la table stores near me have apparently closed 😢.)

Poor Cherry, we loved you so. Turns out she likes to randomly turn off. I’ve contacted the eBayer about a return. 😭😭😭
Oh no! Maybe it would pay for you to have it repaired? (with a partial refund from the seller?) I hate to see Cherry go, you've been searching for so loooong! And her toys are so beautiful.

Yes, I hinted at that, but seller sounds like they want to dyi the repair (or maybe resell w a no return option who knows). They want me to return and will refund price & shipping,

However, I think she wants to stay, so dropped her at an authorize KA service center this morning. $20 to find out what’s wrong. if it’s the repair I think, it is it’s going to cost $150 approximately, more than fair considering the part is $125. I’m hoping the seller will split some of that cost with me, but I’m starting to think after buying all the attachments that are still in transit and how hard it is to find one of these prolines and that if I get it repaired, it’ll have a warranty. I might just eat the cost. Because I also don’t know how I’m going to possibly repack that huge box - I couldn’t lift it. I had to drag it in the door, I don’t know how I could return to FedEx without throwing my back out.

So think good thoughts while Cherry is at the repair store. 🤞🤞🤞 should know in two days.

Bonus: I found a little hole on the wall, appliance repair stores still exist! I have other things I can bring to them for repair vs replacing w cheap junk made today.

Wow, a local repair shop, that's a great find! Fingers crossed for Cherry!

Yes, and they are an official ka service center too!

FYI, random thing I found out from calling KitchenAid. Costs for sending a mixer to KitchenAid for service:

You can buy a shipping kit, where they ship you a box specifically to send the mixer to them. You can buy this separately too if you’re just moving and wanna have a perfect moving box for your mixer, I think that’s about $25. For shipping it for repair though, after they’ve sent you the box, then send the mixer from the West Coast to them and back, it’s $75.08, I think it was more like $45 if you were shipping from the East Coast. And the repair cost will range between $45-193.57, not ever going above that top specific number. So that’s as much as you can possibly pay to have your mixer repaired in Ohio outside of the shipping cost..

To take it to the local center for diagnosis, it was $20. I was expecting to hear back today, but haven’t and nobody’s answering the phone (so I’m a bit pins and needles about that bc the seller thinks at this point I’m returning it).

And don’t even get me started on the rabbit hole of going to William Sonoma yesterday to see the color of another one on auction in person because that auction was ending in an hour. And that same color on the tilt head mixer, and the stand mixer, which were sitting right next to each other touching even – aren’t the same shade color. (I made them pull another one from the back to double check that it wasn’t a fluke.)

BTW, the mall has expanded greatly sideways since the last time I was there and I literally got lost going in and even trying to get out. And it’s not like I’ve never been to that Williams Sonoma before, grew up going to that mall practically every weekend, and normally have a great sense of direction. I aced my astronomy final by 1, realizing the map placed me off earth and 2, plotted a course to get home using a sexton for goodness sake! (I was the only person in my class to get that right.) So, apparently the mall was remodeled into a hell hall of mirrors. Or, old pp get confused. 🤪

Cherry, episode 1242
Cherry is costing $200 to fix locally at the ka service ctr, but given I got $200 worth of free attachments with I’m ok with it. Especially after going to WM Sonoma and seeing what’s passing for the big ka mixer these days. The new “touch points” means there is nothing shiny at all on their big mixer. The bowl is brushed stainless? and all the trim pieces are a flat metal. Tilted mixer still comes with the chrome trim and sitting next to each other, the 7 quart looked like a very dim sad relative. So I’m looking at this as getting a color I like with the trim I like. And the dc commercial motor I’ve been searching for. I have not shared this yet with the eBay seller because I wanted to get paperwork to prove I wasn’t scamming them asking for a lower price. However, I can only hope they are willing to pitch in to give me a partial refund, but all signs say no and I’m not counting on it. It will mean, hopefully in a couple of weeks, Cherry will make her triumphant return.
