My frig gave up today. So now I'm on the prowl. I understand that the bottom freezers are more

This is prolly too late...but looked at everything before I got my new one...

I love bottom freezers so I knew I wanted that. Hard to find one without french doors - I really didn't want to have to open 2 doors with my hands full but have gotten use to it. The main thing I looked at was rollers on the shelf drawers in the freezer. They can get *heavy/hard to slide* and most do not have any guides let alone rollers on these. I should say only 2 had them and I looked at what might be all that were made at the time.

My recommendation: Kenmore Elite (and I say this even though I got a Fisher/Paykel).

The F/P is super nice (organized bins/full width wine rack/drawer glides - love, love, love it) but... I got a counter depth and while it is big enough for just me, don't think it would do for a family. Also, though the Kenmore is made by Amana -- even the Amana doesn't have the great detail including rollers in the freezer the Kenmore has. KitchenAid, Viking, LG, GE, Samsung, you name it - none had this. GE also had small/narrow crisper drawers - making them appear almost useless, a saleman pointed out this out and I'm glad he did. It also has the flap on the doors to prevent air leaks (though most all newer models have done this). I see LG now has a 2 door fridge/2 drawer freezer. I haven't looked at that but the GE one just like it had those small crispers.

Also, but this may only apply to me...I wanted the side color to match the ss front - only Kenmore, GE, and F/P did that.

All these comments on little intricate details are always helpful. I am such an analytical when

it comes to making a purchase of something I use so often.

So I've now waited long enough that Maytag has put out a new model of a side-by-side that will fit into this little space without the need to remove cupboards and it's a counter-depth as well. The Kenmore was the second choice. The only bottom-drawer model I like is another $2000 and eventually, I realized that with big bins on the door, a smaller frig would be quite satisfactory. Hope I'm right.

And yes, the colour of the sides is critical. I just cannot understand why a company would bother making a non-built-in frig with stainless front and black cabinet. That factor has eliminated so many for me. But it seems to be changing now.

If my frig could hang on for another few weeks, there would probably be more choices to stymie me, but I just can't be around all the time to keep slamming this old guy where it wants attention.

Maytag is made by Whirlpool. Seems they're all in the same boat now. This one is cheap enough that I can change it in a year if I want.

Thanks for your help Maria. Maybe we should have a section here on considerations for kitchen appliances.

Yes, why don't they paint the sides to match? Ditto microwaves...

I don't understand why in a freestanding fridge most can't invest in a few cents to paint the box the same color. Those companies wouldn't/didn't get my business.

I'm having the same problem with an over the range micro -- I had a 36" hood. Very few come in 36" (none I like) but for all you can get filler panels -- guess how many come with stainless steel ones that will match the front? So far, zero.

Ah yes. My problem 2 years ago. I ended up leaving the side space open so

what I have are 2 gaps down each side of the oven. I had a special problem as well though, in that I needed it to be very minimal in height as its predecessor was. The cupboards were all created around my old guys.

The height is a nuisance as the KA micro-range hood combo is not high enough about my cooktop and I sometimes bang a lid into it. IT was the shortest available.

Egads - I hadn't measured height; yes my old one didn't get in the way at all

KA has a new curved fronted micro-hood. I saw it on display, it came in 36" and I really liked how it worked; then I measured how far it stuck out from the cabinets - 3 5/8 inches! Guess they don't they realize folks buy these for smaller/older kitchens. With the lowered height + amount it stuck out it would look huge in my small kitchen - not to mentions how many times I'd have to lean around it to see into my side cabinet given my cooktop is to one side in the corner.

And then there are the micros with such food snacks as: frozen chicken nuggets, hot dogs, potato skins, cheese sticks, and nachos -printed right on the front. So classy, so healthy. Sadly though, this means some people eat this so often it needed to be printed right on the front of the unit.

That's so funny. I had to go look, mine has buttons for beverage, vegetables/ chicken/ etc. The

only snack listed is popcorn. I guess I'm lucky.
