My Saturday Six

Woke up early (5ish) from the sound of my neighbor's pit bull trying to push his way into our living room! (He almost made it.) Yes, we have a leash law.

Made a large frittata for breakfast after seeing someone or other making one on tv... avocado slices, marinated tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, broccoli, onion. Very good, served with orange herb tea and orange-cranberry scones I made (from a freezer can!).

Still working on my blueberries from last week. I may try blueberry sorbet tomorrow. First of the white corn is out. ' Love that. Found out the dill I was waiting for turned out NO to be dill, but some giant, brown-headed, odorless ugly thing that I may try and post a picture of here soon, to get suggestions on what it might be...

Really wishing I lived in Paris or San Francisco so I could go to the "white" picnic!

Tonight is spinach lasagna made from tomato sauce from local tomatoes (yay! finally). Along with broccoli slaw (yeah, I know they don't really go together, but I am a sucker for wanting to make whatever I see on tv that looks good).

Last night was crockpot chicken cordon bleu - so-so, miss the crispy crust! But easy.

Dawn, I don't care what Dog Whisperer says I despite pit bulls. They can't

be trusted, IMHO What would he have done finally getting through your living room door...kill you! I can't imagine what else he wanted in there for! I hope you have a phone by your bed so you can call for police and/ or a cast iron skillet to hit him with or something to poke into his eye, should he come after you!

One Dog Whisperer show he did give someone's pit bull (and the owner loved that dog) to a trainer who was a stronger person. That was the only show I've seen of his where he affirmed they are strong dogs and need a strong person to handle them.

They look even stronger when they are inches from your ankles (

I think he wanted to get to our cats. Owner says he's a big baby. It's a real problem in the neighborhood this summer.

last year we went to two shelters looking for a dog

in both, they were full to capacity with Pit Bulls. Aside from a few other dogs the only other breed were Chihuahuas. These dogs are more than a handful and were bred for battle - literally. People figure that out (sometimes tragically) and then the dogs get abandoned and most of them slaughtered. Unfortunately some people still convey this attitude that a Pit Bull is an accessory that makes you sexier or tougher or even more enlightened.

Scary! In Colorado, it's just bears nosing their way into your living room. (And my Six.)

1. Made a lousy clafoutis in between M.'s naps yesterday--I don't think I let it cook long enough. smileys/frown.gif

2. Lots of roasted vegetables cooling for something tonight. We have cheese. So it may be just that and a baguette.

3. Picnic in the park for lunch today--alas, nothing exciting, just sandwiches from the deli.

4. Long week. Very, very long week. The bright food-memory spot was a plate of pizza from Whole Foods on Friday night. This is probably enough to get me kicked off this board.

5 (remotely FRC). A lady carrying a Magnolia Bakery bag complained loudly about being stuck behind us (with our stroller) at a crosswalk (57th and 8th) where the light was red. She caught me on a bad weekend, because I turned around and barked, "I'm not pushing my infant across the street on a red light. JUST GO AROUND US or go back to Iowa." I really have no deep-seated dislike of Iowans (and apologies to any Iowa Swappers.) No idea what came over me, except maybe sleep deprivation. She was aghast. Oh, well.

6. Maybe I should go back to decaf.

Between naps...reminds me of making ravioli from scratch, two different fillings, when my daughter

was about 3 months old. And I had to roll and cut the ravioli by hand. And made sauce. I think I'm permanently scarred because I've never made it again. I should have done it over a few days instead of all in one very long afternoon.

Dawn, they have a Diner en Blanc NY; also Pits aren't all bad...

Do a search on "diner en blanc ny" there is a website and FB page.

My neighbor had the sweetest dog who was a pit. He crawled up and slept on a low tree limb, which sorta made him look like Snoopy or something. His name was Popeye because he was all white with a black circle around one eye (like in "Our Gang/The Little Rascals"). So cute. Sweetest dog ever with anyone and every kid.

Now, a friend also has a very sweet female pit, BUT, she is aggressive with other dogs (she was bitten by another dog as a pup) and she is too big/strong to handle on walks except by my friend's husband. It really bothers me she hasn't gotten the dog training to so she wouldn't get aggressive in fearful situations and she won't muzzle her in potential problem situations. That's not the dog's fault.

my weekend 6

drove down to our cabin friday nite. DH was already there and attended a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for a 2 year old with neuroblastoma, and brought me a nice to go dinner. our little community really rallied for this event.

Saturday was a nice slow day enjoying the outdoors and getting our finished cinder block raised bed painted. dinner was pan fried panko crusted salmon, those stuffed zucchini boats with fridge cleanout veggies, grilled corn and a nice quinoa and roasted veggie side, dressed in a lemon cumin dressing. DH will have nice leftovers for his work week.

Sunday, DH headed home for work and I have a lovely cabin day to myself. tried this crockpot bolognese using ground pork and ground moose, http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/kelsey-nixon/slow-cooker-bolognese-sauce.html, it's cooling now.

more fridge cleanout: a pot of stuffed cabbage soup using up more ground moose and 2 mystery sausages and a package of slaw mix that needed to be used. good comfort food for DH's return to work after 3 weeks down here.

made jam from some very ripe pluots and plums. I had no pectin, so just cooked it down till it jelled. more like a butter. very nice and will freeze 2 pints.

now, shall I stay in for dinner or take myself and my kindle to Suzie's Cafe for fried clams??

Pit Bulls...Here's a link to a recent story about a Pit Bull attack that occurred to a neighbor of

mine. I volunteer at a privately funded, three-year old, non-profit no-kill animal shelter in south Alabama. The founders initially accepted some surrendered Pit Bulls. These dogs are not adoptable, and we will no longer take in Pit Bulls. Some folks who raise Pit Bulls have tried to convince us that they are victims of their training, and they are sweet, lovable dogs, but experience doesn't prove this. We are very suspicious of anyone who contacts us looking for Pit Bulls to adopt, (I hope you can figure out why). It is sad to condemn a breed of dog, but it is a human fault, not theirs. Check out Michael Vick's record with fighting Pit Bulls to understand how horrific this issue is. Wow, you really got me on my soap-box today, I APOLOGIZE for a VERY NFR post!

sweet is the exact word used to describe the PB family dog that killed the pregnant mom

in Pacifica. Pit Bulls can be quite beautiful animals. So can bears, mountain lions, cobras... Unlike bears, wolves etc that are natural predators, Pit Bulls were bred specifically to be killers. Like all modern dog breeds they were essentially genetically modified. Not in a lab but over time where specific traits were bred in and out of them. "Sweetness" would be nurture over nature for a Pitt Bull. The nature part is a time bomb and always will be for the breed.
A few years back there was an effort by a PETA group to rename "Pitt Bulls" to "St Francis Terrier" (false advertising most foul) Finally this numbskull idea was nixed after the adopted dogs were killing off other pets in their new homes and surrounding neighborhoods

I agree, when I was using crutches and a cane, I would get people

sighing loudly and impatiently behind me because I was walking slow. Hello, disabled person in pain trying to walk! Stop crowding my six! It was even more annoying (for them) when I had to stop to rest, although I would try to "pull over" to the side of the sidewalk so as not to impede traffic. I was just so annoying! LOL bite me.

My weekend 6

Friday night I had my friend Deb over for dinner, it was my meat CSA pick up night so I unloaded the bounty of meaty goodness on my table and let her pick what was for dinner. We had dry aged sirloin steaks, pan fried, and baby green beans with lemon and butter, a bottle of sparkling rose, the leftover Negroni jelly shots from Thursday night and some bacon jalapeno poppers as a starter. It was terrific!

I was cooking for the food blogger picnic that night and roasted the marinated chicken legs in parchment bags. When chilled the juices did form a nice jelly around the chicken but the marinade was bland to my taste. It needed more umph. Think I will tinker and try again. I want to do duck legs.

I also made the sangria that night, 3 bottles of wine's worth, and I could have doubled it and still have run out. I saved the fruit and am making more tonight. The Tiger Salad using shaved zucchini and fennel was wonderful!

The picnic was a great hit, lots of people came and afterwards we went out for ice cream. I got horribly sunburned though, just on my calves and feet, looks like I'm wearing red socks - hilarious!

Sadly I developed sore tonsils and swollen glands on Saturday night and Sunday I had a good fever so I had a quart of chicken and a quart of duck stock from the meat CSA so I thawed them, added the leftover drumsticks (carefully kept chilled in my ice chest during the picnic) and in a weird move I added the leftover zucchini salad. I also added some grated ginger. It was surprisingly good. I would nap, wake up and have a mugfull and then go back to sleep, repeat through the entire day and today I'm feeling much better. The miracle of poultry broth right?

There is no training that will counteract genitically determined behavior...

this is a quoate from one of the comments on that article and I fully agree with it. We had a mean miniature poodle. It was a genetic trait and we kept it under control until he started getting older and had a monster dog to live with until the day he died. Yes, we loved him but had to keep him away from other people. We were bitten many times...never again!
