My Saturday Six

I love this CSA, they are local to SF though, 4505 Meats

Ryan Farr buys whole animals and butchers them in his shop and work kitchen, and makes primal cuts as well as sausages, burgers and rillettes, pates and other wonderful things. At Christmas/New Year he does a duck stuffed with Tartine bread and truffles everywhere, my eyes are still rolling just thinking about this duck. He has pork, beef, duck, chicken, rabbit and lamb. Last night with my chicken/duck soup fest I nibbled on his pork rillettes. They were in a small tub with pork aspic on the bottom and herbed pork fat on the top, I'm sure this is what happened when he filled the tubs and chilled them. Tastiest damn thing ever. I love my butcher, can you tell?

Heather, does your CSA deliver to your door? Looks like they come here to the south bay...

Couldn't find much detailed info on the CSA. Sounds like you love their meat, and my favorite store to get meat went out of business.

Is this where you got the Mangalitsa?

I remember that...

Very sad.

Oh and remember that friend with the Pit? She had me pet sit once for a weekend (I really didn't want to not being a dog person/knowing even though she was a sweet dog, she was of a size I couldn't control if I needed to) and when she wanted me to again, this time for over 2 weeks and I said no, she became upset to the point of ended our 40 yr friendship. Still thrown by that.

Dogs are kinda scary to me, I was randomly attacked in a park by an off-leash German Shepard back when I was a teen, and the people who owned the dog didn't take it seriously (as I was screaming at them from the other side of the park for help) and kept shouting back the dog was friendly.

And another friend, whose parents raised show dogs, gets upset whenever she sees a kid (or even a small adult) walking a big dog because if something happened they aren't strong enough to handle them. (My BIL owned a lab, a lab for goodness sake, that jumped not once, but three times, right through the glass living room window to go after something she saw on the street.)

I'm a great cat herder. If a cat gets ticked off at me, I can take 'em.

So, what you're saying at #5 is that being rude isn't just...

...a typical native New Yorker trait? Maybe as a tourist, she was just operating under the old adage, "when in Rome...". ;~>

Yeah, she was being an outright boob.

My partner is from NY, NY. He's constantly taking advantage of his "New York attitude". He's got a spring-loaded middle finger, and I can hardly take him anywhere.

"Rude" knows no State lines.

we are currently watching a Golden Retriever for friends away on vacation

hate to say it but, a very sweet dog. Very calm and friendly in fact my daughter's corgi who I had previously thought of as submissive, is the alpha dog in their new friendship. I'm a big guy but even if I did not have kids or other animals, I would not for a second entertain the idea of dog sitting a pit bull.

Cat herder. Funny. Brings to mind Ben Stiller uncomfortably describing his childhood in "Meet the Parents"

You pick up from various drop locations, or their store, they don't deliver.

You can email Kyle and he'll tell you where the drop locations are.

When you sign up each month he sends a reminder and a link to select what kind of bag and how large you want and then you note in the "notes" section which drop you want to pick it up at.

I have to say the quality is amazing.

The Mangalitsa was a special one off by a chef friend of mine. If he does it again I will be sure to let you know.

You can also buy a whole animal yourself and have 4505 Meats butcher it for you, or get friends together and take a class and then share out the meat.

Thanks Maria. I'm way far north of NYC though ;o) THIS dog is viscious

and gets out of his yard often. Usually well behaved, but all it takes is once. Ask the owners of the cat that *used* to live behind him. Everyone is afraid to turn him in because the owner has health problems and is generally a nice guy.

But I know, each individual dog is different.)

Good to know!

Not ready to go out to pick-up anything as yet. One of the things I want to do when I'm able to get around again is make a trip over to the Corralitos Market & Sausage Co. - pretty sure they cut up animals as well (think that's where the Zuckerberg types take their "kills") they have the best stuff, and I've been craving their jerky. A bit off the beaten path, but worth the trip when heading toward Aptos/Monterey.

I've heard about them, and oh yum, jerky!

Last night I made a coconut curry with a pork chop that was so fat, incredible. I used yellow thai curry, butternut squash and carrots.

Tonight I'm having a sirloin flap steak rubbed in harissa.

I need to make soup with the lamb stock because I need room in the freezer.

It's fun to browse my freezer for dinner! And I have sausages coming out of my ears in there.... bacon cheddar brats are my favorite.

Sounds delish!

Yes, there jerky is wonderful, and I'm not normally a jerky kinda girl. One 4th of July as my friend and I prepped the feast, we started nibbling on this and ended up nearly polishing the whole thing off it was so good.
