My Saturday Six

1) Can't believe I'm the first to post at this weeks Satuday Six. Yay!

2) I'm making chili con carne for dinner tonight. Hubby is extatic - he loves chili.

3) I forgot to buy dishwasher detergent at the store today, and now the store is closed. I will have to cross my fingers and hope that what I have left will get me through the weekend. I am not washing up manually. It's just not in my genes.

4) I found some wonderful strawberries at the market today. I bought three pounds and I'm thinking strawberry torte? Strawberries with creme anglaise? Or vanilla ice cream??

5) I didn't buy chocolate for this weekend on purpose. I hope I'll be able to stick with it (- or it will have to be a late night trip down to 7/11...)

6) Found a package of White Miso in the fridge today. It's still okay, but I have no idea what to use it for. Might have to google "recipe white miso"....OR take a chance, add it to something and hope it will turn out well. *LOL*

My Saturday Six

Making the pipian (mole verde) and tlatonile sauces. Pipian simmering now but I'm not happy with the consistency and the recipe I used had sesame seeds - overpowers everything else - dang it! Looked at the menu from the place we had it and they didn't list sesame seeds.

Got to get some chicken to go with the sauces - I can't believe it, I have NOT chicken left in my freezer and no stash of smoked pulled pork for quick meals.

Get some pork and smoke it - want to make some tamales from some of it (think I'm on a Mexican kick here)

Cleaning out the pantry

Decide what I am serving for father's day - leftovers of my playing today???

MUST go to Trader Joe's - craving some chocolate croissants and stuff that I can only get there - I'll be glad if and when they open up over here - where they are is just way too busy and congested.

Here you go Eva. Steve 2's Miso Glazed Sea Bass

I have used this method with tuna, and I think it would be delicious with any firm white fish.

Miso-Glazed Sea Bass
(From Aqua Restaurant)

1/3 cup SAKE
1/3 cup MIRIN
1/3 cup LIGHT YELLOW MISO
3 Tbsp (packed) BROWN SUGAR
2 Tbsp SOY SAUCE
4 6-ounce SEA BASS FILLETS (about ¾ “ thick)
2 Tbsp chopped GREEN ONIONS
2 Tbsp chopped FRESH BASIL

Mix first 5 ingredients in shallow glass baking dish. Add fish and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to 6 hours.

Preheat broiler. Remove fish from marinade. Place fish on rimmed baking sheet. With broiler door slightly open, broil fish 6-inches from heat source until just opaque in center, about 6 minutes. Transfer to plates. Sprinkle with green onions, basil and serve. Serves 4

My Saturday Six

Still scratching my head thinking "do they really have 7-11s in Norway?" I didn't know that! (Eva, I vote for strawberries straight out of the container)

Just came back from a funeral - my cousin underwent heart surgery and there were complications from it, his heart wasn't strong enough to take it, and he died

Sitting here wondering why does family have to grow up and move away, and that today is probably the last time I'll see all but one of them since he was the last remaining first cousin that was still local - no one really here for anyone to come back and visit; immediate family mostly here, but "family reunion"-type family have all been moving away, slowly but surely over the years

I'm on my fifth hour of my "new way of eating" and it's not going well!

After shopping at the grocery store, I realized that I do eat very healthily - now if I can just omit the carbs and sugary junk. And double my time in the pool and in the weight room. I bought: whole grain angel hair pasta/feta cheese/tabouleh combo at the cold salad bar and decided next time I'll make my own; whole grain white bread; light beer (I never buy beer, but it sounded good to go with chili (thanks Eva) tomorrow); diet coke, olive oil, tuna, and ravioli stuffed with spinach and cheese; marinara sauce, homegrown strawberries, green beans, broccoli, garbazno beans to make hummus; a roasted chicken for tonight; and crushed tomatoes.

What I am most proud of: I walked RIGHT past the candy aisle(s) (there are many); the pastries-in-a-box aisle; and the bakery aisle, and didn't flinch an inch.

o.k., someone 'splain this to me?? six randon thoughts on Saturday? did a search and wasn't able to

find the original?

But am working the job on the docks here--with the cruise ships. it is not going well, however I am so damned stubborn, can't seem to quit until I feel I have given it my best shot. had a resignation letter in my backpack all week, so it's coming soon. miss cooking and being at sea. mostly miss a job that requires a brain!

Saturday is my day off. because this job is so different than my real job have not been able to adjust my food and sleep schedule---so, went to sleep too early last night, had oatmeal and blueberries at 4 a.m. decided lunch at 9 would be o.k., so broiled a piece of white king and baked a sweet tater and did some green beans.
it is now 2:30 just did two pieces of crostini with a bit of the salmon, capers, cilantro and more.
going to do some chicken mole with my friend Dona Maria later.
summer in town is fun for the first time in 15+ years. being on the docks I am seeing people I haven's seen for too long.
just saw Wild China on the Travel Channel. reminds me to get back on my travel schedule!
Peru next and then Tibet.
so far our weather has been pretty good, deck is pretty. a few pots of herbs, cherry tomatoes and flowers.
need to get back to a workout program. on my feet all day and outside, but getting no real cardio or strength training. walking is interupted with standing with a 1# sign.
Happy Sunday Everyone and Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads,
Nan

It was back in early May when ErininNY first posted a thread on it. Not sure if

it was an original idea of hers, but I love it! Are you going to Peru and Tibet on a ship!!?

Nope, those will be on my dime--can't think of a job either way?? Have a job in the fall, thinking

Peru after that.
Tibet next fall.
Those are the two most physical trips on my list so want to do them while I am still pretty mobile.
thanks,
Nan

My Saturday Six

Hot, hot, hot today -- heat index 104 degrees!

Thanks, Missy :p -- no TJ's, and no chocolate croissants. What to do when you can't think of anything else????? AARRGGGHHH

Shelf fell off the 'fridge door this morning. Nothing broke, but we couldn't find the bracket that used to hold it! The grand result was that *I* got to clean the back of the d**n thing and scrub 5 years of crud from underneath. No FUN!!

How do I know how hot, hot, hot it is? I threw up my hands after the icebox incident and went to Bastrop to walk the river and get the mail. It wasn't any cooler down there but it sure was pretty!! And I got the old heart rate up for a good 45 minutes!

DH wants a masala curry tomorrow. Must be the heat again! Gathered up the spices and the paste ingredients and made a flan. I got the most beautiful fresh raspberries yesterday at Costco. Nice fresh berries with raspberry coulis. YUMMY.

My Saturday Six

1. I found the first tomatoes at the Farmer's Market today...mine are coming on, out in the garden...Can't wait.

2. I have a Prime Rib roast marinating...part of hubby's request for his special day tomorrow.

3. It is overcast and I hear thunder, I hope it rains.

4. I am sipping a lovely Pinot Noir from Linda Stradley's vineyard in OR. She and her husband were here for dinner a while back and treated us to some of their bottles of wine. http://whatscookingamerica.net/

5. I am watching adorable new baby, yellow finches learning to drink for our water fountain just outside the widow where my computer is.

6. Hubby is painting the interior of the house. Today he did part of the master bedroom and all of the closet. He even took drawers out of the dressers, dusted the interior of the dresser, and the back side that is against the wall. He vacuums up after he is finished. I am truly fortunate!

My Saturday Six

1) couldn't sleep half the night. DH got up, quietly closed the door, and let me sleep until 11am -- ELEVEN A.M. - WOW!!!

2) breakfast was the rest of the kheer I made yesterday - oh YUM!

3) got dressed and went to visit a friend in the hospital and check out walking shoes

4) it was a bust at the shoe store, but nice to see my friend

5) did some Trader Joes shopping -- asking myself yet again -- WHY DO I GO ON SATURDAY??! so crowded

6) marinating steaks for dinner... garlic mashed potatoes... roasted broccoli

Nan...hahahaha...

I read that as 'walking the docks", I know you would not resort quite to that. LOL smileys/smile.gif

However I feel like you, not being at sea is very restricting although I have never done quite what you have done.ie research vessels etc.

How about putting your name with a crew agency/net work.
Get a job on a mega yacht, these are few and far between in the present climate but they do pop up.
My daughter's beau is now 1st mate on a 165' and (she is a stu for the summer in the MED. as she wont be able next year after finishing uni)I know they were looking for a chef. I think they have one now but these jobs do come by....send your resume to the "crew network" eg....another daughter has a branch in her business....if you are a taker PM me if you like.........
I have done the cruise ship terminals for a long time now...very frustrating but that is the way it goes.
Hugs

My Saturday Six (almost Sunday Seven).....

I am getting a bit fed up with DH....we are waiting for guests to arrive from the airport...I have supper ready and he is only NOW checking all the showers for them.......

Need to tell a story here...while I was innnocently nursing my dying mother in SA I get a call...giving me %&$#$&$%(*( about how I had the gardener chop down a tree and cause damage?????)
Never would I have one of these chaps chop down anything that has taken ages to grow without my being there...for many reasons and this one was >>>HE CUT THROUGH THE WATER PIPE...the mains from the road>>>> well the waterchaps came and put everything back together but they did not put back the pressure "container"...whatever that is, BUT we now have such pressure that we turn off the mains when we go out and now......

The guest showers FLOOD everywhere and DH has finallly got the message 1/2 an hour before guests arrive and the night before a SUNDAY when all shopps are shutttt!!!

OK.....

For my #2
Made broccoli soup for them as I am sure they would like this after a flight from Canada but I screwed up....used "au natural" bacon and that lovely smokey flavour is missing...too bad

#3
Made the chicken from above Jamie's Roast Chicken in Milk...think we will have this tonight instead of soup and have the soup tomorrow night.....

#4
Really looking forward to lunch on the beach tomorrow at my favourite place with those bronze beach boys in attendance....yes, I will look even with DH right there.....much as he really is my most favourite man in the whole world...(we have our 40th anni this year).....

#5
If guests dont arrive soon I will have finished the WHOLE bottle of Rose on my own and have only tasted the food so far....well, I can handle it I guess....(the fact they are still to arrive not the wine, I'll slow down now smileys/smile.gif)

#6
Very proud of my wee 12 year old grandie, she is really a full-fledged member (of 3) in a regatta with her parents this week-end. It is quite a big regatta and she is working foredeck......
and my other grandie who has a ballet recital at the same time and no immediate family member can go and watch....something that we always try to do is BE there for important events but this one we ALL have our thing to do.......cant quite kick that guilty trip though.

AND # 7 for tomorrow.....Whew...I got in 6 on Saturday again...boy I'm getting good smileys/smile.gif

My six

Saturday Six

1. Broken out in hives and wondering if it is food or environmental. Been dealing with this since November 08.

2. Searching for information on Apple Miso Muffins as seen here.

3. Panko crusted pork chops, black-eyed peas and grilled corn salad.

4. Took an most unusual nap this afternoon.

5. The South is hot and humid.

6. Note to self. Go buy blue fingernail polish for great niece and make a “girly” basket to mail to her.

Hi Joanie, please let me know what you think of the Roast Chicken in Milk,

I didn't make it yet and would love your take on it.

Me too!

1 Friday -Made nacatamales with future in-laws
2 Saturday -Ate one (they're big!) THE most delicious new thing I've put in my mouth for a while!
3 Making an apricot pie for my dad for Father's Day (I need to get going on this!)
4 Bought another toaster yesterday (this one is to replace "The Carbonizer")
5 Larry's Produce is supposed to open today YAY! (I'll go Monday to avoid the crowds)
6 Starting to pick from the garden. One little yellow pear tomato, so cute!

The sprogs that arrived from Canada last night devoured it....We loved ...

it. I had the caesar salad dip and crisp baguette on the side. It is a hit. I think the left over juice would add to a Thai style soup.
