My Saturday Six

Tsk, tsk, are we starting to slip on this?

- Missed the farmer's market again today - it's always over before I remember it

- Thinking of what else I can chop up and melt in chocolate. The blueberry "fudge" was a hit although dd said "what, is this jelly in here?!"

- Gotta make Jamie Oliver's chicken soon. It looks good and I have thighs in the freezer waiting to be used.

- I went to the local surplus store again this week and was disappointed to find that many of my "finds" from a couple of weeks ago are gone, probably never to return. Hmm, no more Trader Joe's cherry juice (

- Tomorrow's supposed to be a rainy day, so I'm making the plum kutchen to take to a neighbor's for "coffee" (when do we ever have *just* coffe!) on Monday night

- Small green tomatoes finally starting to grow in the backyard. Good thing, heirloom tomatoes at the local grocery store were $3.99! I bought a tiny one. It just looked so good...

I hope this has not run it's course. I love reading these posts.

My guy and I both have Sat. and Sun. off at the same time. Woo Hoo!

We went to chili's for lunch. What can I say...Huge disappointment!

I think in my quest to cut down electric costs I have become the BBQ queen. I have a gas oven and it puts out an incredible amount of heat. Yesterday's dinner was Music City Missy's easy chicken roll-ups done in the grill. And today I did a broccoli, ham and Swiss Cheese Quiche in the grill.

Dinner tonight was Mimi's Sticky Chicken on the rotisserie. Soooo good!

Tomorrow will certainly involve BBQ Chicken and Pineapple Pizza on the grill. A favorite here.

Just finished watching "Night at the Museum 2". Loved the 1st one...not so much the 2nd. Oh well.

My Saturday Six

1 - Said a final goodbye to a dear friend today. Learned a new word - Makaria or Mercy Meal, the meal following the burial service in the Greek Orthodox Church.

2 - Leftover homemade waffles re-warmed are almost as good as freshly made ones to a 10 year old boy. smileys/smile.gif

3 - Impromptu lunch with friends (even if it is sandwich makings and a bag of chips from the deli) restores the soul.

4 - Fresh veggies from the garden make the perfect dinner -zucchini, summer squash, & tomatoes sauteed in butter and olive oil with leeks and garlic - Heavenly!

5 - You can't go wrong with a nice grilled New York steak - the perfect summer entree!
~runs quickly away from Joe~ smileys/wink.gif

6 - Invite someone over for a meal today - don't wait for your house to be perfect, or the perfect menu, or the perfect occasion - just do it!

The Chicken Roll-Ups sound great - and great to know they grill well.

When my oven was on the fritz, I did sticky buns on the grill - you can grill anything!

My Saturday Six

1. Dawn, I also missed the farmer's market today... just couldn't get up, get dressed and out the door. Get lazy on weekends.

2. Had my coffee and a bowl of Special K - dr. says my cholesterol is too high so it's back to eating the cereal boxes... gotta get more fiber.

3. Surveyed the fridge and saw there were enough leftovers to make hubby happy - leftover Texas shredded beef and all the fixings for tacos. Whipped up some salsa to go with it.

4. Yes, it's too hot to bake, but taking a good friend out for her birthday tomorrow and wanted to make her a little cake - made the Blackberry Wine Cake. Discovered I was out of blackberry wine, so used cherry wine instead. Filled it with cream cheese frosting and sliced strawberries. Will top it with chocolate dipped strawberries in the morning.

5. Remembered to scoop out enough batter for 1 cupcake for DH, otherwise the little cake isn't getting out of the house in one piece.

6. Watched DH eat the luscious-looking tacos while I ate a salad. Why is it that it didn't look quite so luscious the day before my dr. appointment, when I could still eat it? Ah well... think I'll go have another bowl of Special K for dessert.

My Saturday Six -- 49th day over 100 degrees, and no rain.

It'still Saturday! A HOT one, but a good one!

Bastrop Homecoming was this weekend -- big parade, rodeo, and the celebrating high school class (30th) was in rare form! Big parade in Bastrop doesn't meet Macy's standard (Main Street is only 2 blocks) but the Cushman motorcycles and the horses and wagons give it it's very own special flair!

I did have to venture in to Austin today to try to find next month's book club selection -- we are reading Steinbeck's East of Eden. I think all the high schoolers have already bought up the supply. But the trip was rewarded by a really nice glass of Earl Grey Iced tea from a tea shop under the live oak trees with a saxophone player accompanied by bongo drums for entertainment! (And a salted caramel chocolate chunk cookie.)

Dinner was a really nice ribeye from Central Market, fresh corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes dressed with rice vinegar and fresh basil from the pot on the porch that I water twice a day!

Tomorrow we are grilling the Hatch cheese and pepper sausages I got at Central Market. The Hatch festival begins soon -- I am getting a head start, and roasting a whole mess of peppers to freeze. One day I will go to New Mexico where they grow these peppers -- the air is filled with heavenly Hatch smoky pepper aroma right about now!!! They only grow in a very small area. CM already is stocking up on Hatch cheesy scones, Hatch sourdough bread, Hatch cowboy burgers, Hatch salsa, Hatch chips, everything Hatch, Hatch. YUM

If Friday counts for Saturday Six, I made a few pounds of maple walnut and maple macadamia fudge to send in a care package to my son who begins his final year of law school soon. It is so good -- I'll post the recipe tomorrow.

My wekend six:

1. Was very lucky to get Friday off. It was a rare beautiful day, mid 80's and NO HUMIDITY!!! So I left early for the PYO and picked raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. The raspberry fields are just beginning to produce but I got a flat full. The fragrance in the field from all those raspberries was intoxicating, the bees loved it too! Blackberries were a bit farther along, they were hugh and picking was fast. Blueberries were the hi-bush type with very small berries and are at their end, very slow picking but I got a few. Home to make jam now.

2. I also had yellow plums from the farmers market so I started with the plum and lavender jam. I am surprised at how good it is, I was not sure I wold like it. I think it will be great as topping on melted brie in those little filo cups and then garnish with a single dried lavender flower.

3. Next I made raspberry jam and it is wonderful, mostly because the raspberries were perfect. I really like the new Sure Jell less sugar pectin. The jam is not hurt your teeth sweet and the fruit flavor is more pronounced.

4. Sat am was another trip to the farmers market. I was chatting with the guy that sells the yellow plums about the jam I made and he asked if I like Damson plums. They are hard to find around here. He had two quarts in the truck he could sell me. It was a bad year here for damsons, too overcast and rainy in the spring. He told me to only quarter them and leave the skin on when I make the jam. So, that's how I made it, YUM!

5. Next a batch of purple plum, raspberry, mint jam wrapped up the jam making. I got the idea from the small batch preserving book. I think it will be good in a tart with an almond layer and a jam layer.

6. Sat evening was a outdoor concert (B52'S) at Wolftrap which means a tailgate dinner. My friend made marinated grilled chicken with peanut sauce and individual naans! I made Fusion Coleslaw with peanuts, raisins and an Asian dressing. We snacked on tomato peach salsa that she made and a bowlful of pineapple tomatillos from the farmers market. Dessert was shortcake topped with a mix of fresh picked berries dressed with a berry caramel sauce. We ate well and enjoyed the show.

Today is rest.......

Pat, I can't imagine it being over 100 degrees and dry every day....

It gets hot here but not too many days over a 100 and I am a HUGH wimp when it does happen. We are low on rain too but the humidity is still with us! I am looking forward to fall.........

Gosh, you made me so homesick!!

The best thing about living in NOVA and in Harper's Ferry was the picking!!! But to take it all to Wolftrap is pure heaven. What a great night -- the B52's and fusion outdoor food! Wow.

Have you tried the toaster oven for rewarming those leftover homemade waffles? yummy!

And they get a nice little crispness to them around the edges.

My Sunday Six

1. Had a wonderful Chinese dinner last night with family. I made Black Pepper Chicken, egg rolls (delish) and a funny shrimp appetizer. I took large shrimp, peeled and deveined them, rolled them in oyster sauce and wrapped in a rectangle of egg roll wrapper. They were the hit of the dinner. Why is it lately that simple is the best?

2. I realized that I get quite cranky when people are watching me cook and talking to me when I am frying things in a vat of boiling oil.

3. I also realized that I should not deep-fry appetizers when having a large group of people over for dinner. I never quite look my best after I have been frying things in a vat of boiling oil.

4. I have a large amount of jalapeno peppers waiting for me to make jam out of them. I am going to try and get them done today.

5. My sister has gone back home and I sure miss her.

6. I finished my soup kitchen! See link below.

"Plum and lavender jam" - now that inspires me to get cooking again

Been lazy and looking at all the food we have in the cupboards, and have been having leftovers and easy stuff lately (not that I can use the heat as an excuse here!). But plum and lavender jam wants me to dive back into making something fun...

Hi - you might want to try Cheerios for good fiber. I guess it is one of

the best for fiber content (both insoluble for digestive system and soluble for improving cholesterol). Also Thomas's Light Multigrain English muffins have 8 - repeat 8! - grams of fiber and they taste like white, fluffy ones! Very good.
