Just wondering, is this something that's done on twitter/facebook, whatever, to update people on what you're doing? I am "facebook-free", so...

Found a 1957 version of the Fanny Farmer Junior Cookbook for kids. And it was in the recycle bin at the library! I'm not proud... my son is turning 9 next week, so the simple recipes are perfect for him. Hey, they're perfect for my baking skills!

Thinking of what to do with 7 (small) heads of cabbage staring me in the face. Stuffed cabbage, cole slaw, same ol', same ol...

Going to a beer and wine tasting tonight with food samples from local area restaurants, and auction fundraiser - should be fun - haven't been to an auction in years...

Gotta see Blind Side before tomorrow night...

Went on an internet search for archived pictures of a torn-down local landmark this morning. Found one, except it was only assessible through a subscription at the library - therefore the cookbook find...

Plans for tomorrow inlcude going to the CNY Blooms garden show - we need a taste of spring...

My weekend six - BEAUTIFUL and in the 60s

Spent the morning at the walk in clinic with DD - she went to her dr earlier this week but her dr has left the practice and she saw a NP who did nothing so she's gotten consistenly worse. This new place did a great work up - she's got a bug that has turned into bronchitis, lots of fluid on her ears, and an infection.

Went to Costco to get the prescriptions, got the new greek feta, a wedding gift but not much else.

Made fried chicken with smashed potatoes and gravy - make DH happy but DD finally passed out on the sofa so I didn't dare wake her.

Tomorrow is last day of the Nashville Lawn & Garden show - MUST go - treat myself AFTER I go work a few hours.

Making tar pit wings for a friend for his birthday - I fixed them for him one time about 6-8 years ago and they are still all he talks about

Start taxes - ugh. Although for some reaso I feel like it's going to be easier since DH had almost no side business this past year.

Try Asian-Style slaw with lime juice, ginger, scallions, red bell pepper, cilantro, sesame oil, etc.

My weekend Sax . . . SIX! (Man!)

-Made my first No Knead bread. Slammed it together (if you can consider a 23 hour rise "slamming")using one of my new sourdough starters, High-Gluten white flour and organic Whole Wheat. To my GREAT surprise, it turned out perfect. Thin but crunchy crust, nice, open crumb and tastes as much like a San Francisco Sourdough as anything I've ever had in the city.

-Committed to laying a new walnut floor in the living room on Thursday. Flooring to be delivered Monday. Yikes!

-Furious with Michael Ruhlman for his hubristic statement about people being "too stupid to cook", I made his "roast chicken in an hour" certain I'd subsequently be trashing it. To my GREAT surprise, it turned out to be excellent. Timing was a bit off but his version required a 2-3lb bird and mine was 5 lbw. Still, very nice.

- Recieved 3 cookbooks from Sandi in Hawaii in the same delivery as my 59 cent copy of Rosengarten's "Taste"

-Found, bid on (and won) 2 different Coach shoulder bags on ebay. No, I'm NOT exploring my feminine side, they're a surprise for CB. (Now if I could just come up with an "occasion", everything will be copacetic.) Might just give 'em to her because it's a day with the word "day" in it.

-Realized I might just get the hang of this "husband-thing" yet.

It was a neighborhood grocery store, but

very favorite local, rich in history... one of those nostalgiac kinds from childhood that "everyone remembers". Torn down about 8 years ago and it is now a gym (

When you're a kid, ya gotta love a store called a "meats fair" with a giant horse over the entrance! They also had bigger-than-life figures in unexpected places throughout the store, so it was a fun adventure to shop, especially as a kid. I wonder where that horse is now...

Notice the last line at the webpage: "Upon leaving the parking lot, I noticed the hard-hat-wearing Joe Peter (subsequent owner), possibly trying to decide which North Syracuse landmark to destroy next"

Tar Pit wings - On of my favorites also. Good tip from Pat...Make sure you line your pans

with foil. It is a wonderful recipe, but it can really ruin your pans! I really have never experienced anything like it; ....Really sticky mess left behind. I have also adapted the recipe for drumsticks in the past.

So sorry about DD. Bronchitis seems to prevalent in this area also. Never fun being sick.

Best,
Barb

Awww! What a nice, thoughtful thing to do for CB! : ) Is there such a thing as "Coaches" day?

I know there is grandparents day, Mom day, secretaries day, etc....Did Hallmark create such a day? If not, just make one up!

I am sure she will be thrilled that you thought of her!

Best,
Barb

Sunday Six

I woke up at 3:30am to the smell of baked ham. I put it in around 8pm and fell asleep watching a movie. Woke up and went up to bed without a thought of the ham. It is a little well done but not destroyed. Ham jerky on the outside and not too bad on the inside. Please someone tell me that you have done something like this before.

I thought the Farmer's Market meeting was last night when it is really on Tuesday evening. I feel like I am losing my mind.

All of the snow in our front yard has melted, I saw my first robin yesterday, and the geese are returning up North...spring is almost here!!!

I have a new iTouch and cannot get it to recognize my connection and it is making me crazy!

I received some artichoke seeds from a friend and I am hoping we will be able to grow some artichokes this year. I am thinking about growing a salsa garden this year.

The asparagus patch is 3 or 4 years old now so we should get a good crop of asparagus this year. Keeping my fingers crossed on the blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and nectarines.

REC: Seasoned Cabbage. Here's a new one that I got from Publix Apron's that we really liked.

It calls for a 10-oz. bag of shredded cabbage, which I used simply to save time. Probably much more economical and fresher to shred your own. The herb garlic butter was another convenience item, a very expensive stick of imported Kerrygold Irish butter with garlic and herbs. This would be easy to duplicate, with some butter, some garlic and some herbs of choice.

1/2 cup roasted red peppers
2 tablespoons herb garlic butter
1 cup sliced green onions
1 (10-oz.) bag shredded cabbage
1/2 cup chicken broth

1. Preheat large saute pan on medium-high 2-3 minutes. Slice red peppers into thin strips.

2. Place butter in pan, then add peppers and onions; cook and stir 1-2 minutes or until onions are tender.

3. Add cabbage and broth; cook and stir 5-7 minutes or until cabbage is tender.

Makes 4 servings.

My Weekend Six

1) Today started really cold, but since we are getting warmer temperatures now, I hung out all my knitted clothes to air them out. I vacuumed the shelves and cleaned them throughly. I like to air my knitted stuff after a long winter. It just seems like the right thing to do.

2) I baked sweet buns with raisins yeaterday. DH loves sweet buns with raisins. He heats them with the traditional brown cheese. Brown cheese is a hard cheese, made from cows milk, that has been cooked until it's caramelized. Brown cheese has a sweet taste, and we eat it on bread (open sandwiches). It's a family staple over here, and one of the things I really miss after being away for a holiday in another country.

3) The weather has been great both days, and I took the opportunity of trying to teach the puppy (now 8 months old but still a puppy in his moms eyes) to walk on a leash. He pulls like he was paid to do so, and I'm afraid we have a long way to go. I have tried everything, but he's a stubborn little one, my four legged man.

4) We're having home made lasagna for dinner today. Nothing spells comfort food like lasagna in this house.

5) This afternoon was the first day the temperature went above zero since December 2nd last year. I can't wait for the snow to melt and for the first flowers to show.

6) I'm planning to try a one day juice fast tomorrow. I have bought organic apple juice and organic vegetable juice. I will drink water and herbal tea in addition to the juice. I'm excited, and I love juice so much that I can't see this experiment go wrong smileys/wink.gif

Glad you remembered the tip re: foil. It was a mess. I made a rec: on epi which I can't find,

oven baked wings, no memorable "sauce", perhaps a marinade. It was really good. It was cooked in the oven at a high temp, made the wings really crispy, yet kept them moist inside. I will try to search epi if I can find.... It was a nice alternative to TarPit.

I made them both for a party, which was fun! Served with Carrots / Celery / and Blue cheese sauce....It was a fun taste comparison....

We had an old grocery store like that in Redding. There was old wooden floors that squeaked

I hated it when it was torn down for a new modern one.

Special weekend here....

1. Today is our 10th year wedding anniversary

2. yesterday we went out for dinner to celebrate

3. Made dough for croissants yesterday to celebrate the event today

4. put the dough in the fridge overnight after all the folds (6 total), rolled out, cut, shaped and baked for our breakfast today

5. had THE world's worst croissants this morning

6. ego is bruised, but we ended up laughing about it... there's always next year!

Yea, that one was on my day to cook at Apron's. It was good and

I really like that butter. We use it often in Apron's recipes and I usually have a stick in the fridge for times when I just don't have the time.

(((Sally))) Happy Anniversary!

Failed croissants are much more memorable than anything that would have turned out as expected.
