Taking the cherry pie out of the oven right now - thank goodness for canned cherries - I told you I'm not much of a baker!

Filling our picnic basket with all kinds of goodies for fireworks tonight. Meryl's Marinated mushrooms, copper pennies, sharp cheese, deviled eggs, and Loupy's Thunderbolt Potato Salad

Picking more mulberries - they don't have much taste, do they... not tart, but blah sweet

Bought some Sure-Jell yesterday, so I'm all set, when I decide to tackle that project. 'Hope I get to them before the birds do.

I can smell the neighbors' chicken cooking on the grill. Smells so good! Reminds me of church/fire department chicken barbeques.

Planted the cilantro this a.m., along with the 6 parsley plants. That's it, my garden's done, finally. I'm using Alaskan fish emulsion for the fertilizer, works very good.

My Super Saturday Six

- Brownies baking in mini-muffin tins. Kids and visiting cousins will be dabbing white frosting on top and adding some blue and red sparkles.

- Sis is here! Get to have her fabulous potato salad! smileys/bigsmile.gif

- Scaled my meat menu *way* back, as most want hamburgers and hot dogs. I will save the asada, tri-tip, and pork loin for another day.

- Got a whole bagful of lemons from a friend, so lots of freshly squeezed lemonade.

- Mom is here playing the kids, so we get to cook with minimal interruption.

- I think I'm going to attempt making the ricotta poundcake in a bundt pan............

Happy Independence Day!

My Saturday Six

I was invited to a friend's 4th of July party, invited the rest of my family to go, they declined, so it will be just my 10-year-old son going. We will spend some time at the party, then come back here to spend some time with family. They are completely baffled by this turn of events. smileys/smile.gif

Bub is in charge of dessert. Since I am bringing to dishes to the potluck, I opted out of our family menu. We had some leftover cherries I hooked Bub up with Smitten Kitchen's cherry dessert. He is in the kitchen struggling with parchment paper to line the bottom of the pan. He says he doesn't like this recipe anymore. He hasn't even pitted the cherries yet. I told him that's what he gets for skimming recipes. He makes a mean pie though, gorgeous lattice crust.

I made a tuna pasta salad and chipotle baked beans to bring along. They both should go over fairly well, but you never know.

I had my haircut yesterday at this place that I am still not sure about. I don't think I am going back because every time I leave the place, I end up on a freeway headed towards Kansas.

I got the recipe from my sister for her delicious frozen corn that she makes from fresh corn. I have to verify it with her because she told me while I was driving and I want to make sure I have the amounts right. I made some last year and it was amazing!

Happy 4th everyone!

Saturday Six

The blueberry cheesecake is waiting to be topped. I hope I will be able to remove it from the pan - the girls went out last night, so it was just the two of us and a plate of shrimp and a bottle of New Zealand white, and I kind of forgot to cook.

The banana cream pie is waiting to be topped. I didn't realize until this morning that I was serving two desserts topped with blankets of whipped cream, but SIL adores whipped cream, thank goodness.

Elder DD cleaned and went shopping for me.

Finally managed to wake nocturnal younger DD who made the rice and pea salad she insisted on having.

DH will grill steak and sausages.

Bottle of St. Antoine rose is waiting in the fridge.

Happy Fourth!

Saturday Six -

1 I am very pleased with my menu for tonight.(and I am feeling rather full as I had to taste everything)

2 Red, White and Blue...what to make...
Red Pepper marmalade
Blue cheese souffles
White rice but Thai style

3 Have 4 invites to go to for celebrating tonight. Really pleased to have chosen to stay at home and have guests over for dinner instead as it is just too hot to get in the car (which has no shade to be parked in)

4 Missing my Mum, I have so much to chat to her about, none the least about our 3 DD's who are away...one in Venice, one in the Med on a yacht and one with her family cruising through the Caribbean for a month.

5 Really annoyed with myself for breaking the diet, but "She wanted to cook and therefore she eats".

6 Blessed to have such great friends and family to share with.....whether round the table, by phone, email or through forums.

Hugs everyone, have a safe day/evening.

You made me laugh...and you live....

in a place where one drives in squares and you still go the wrong way...thought it was only us visitors that constantly do this....

My Saturday Six

Just got off Skype with my grandaughter -- was thinking of last Saturday when she was baptized at St. Pat's in NYC! She was so cute through it all. Our joy at being together was reflected outside at the 51st street door when a carfull of Albanians waving their red flags out of a red convertible and playing their music joyously drove by. I raised my camera and they practically leaped out of the car, blaring the music and waving more excitedly. It was fun.

We had breakfast at Norma's that morning -- Norma's eggs benedict with asparagus was such a treat! Last time we were there we were seated next to Ted Danson.

Lunch at Dos Caminos after the ceremony ended in some FAB desserts -- the most spectacular was a chocolate mousse cake -- the mousse was spicy with Oaxacan chili pepper. Soo good.

Had my fill (for awhile) of Pinkberry yogurt. They had a promotion for their new passionfruit flavor. Delicious.

Enjoyed Mandoo Bar's Bibimbob, a korean beef and rice dish served in a HOT cast iron bowl. The rice cooks to a crust on the bottom, veggies and chili paste mixed in. YUM.

I miss Loupy too! She was a ray of sunshine! Wish she would find us again.

Fabulous Fourth to all of you!

Sounds delish! And that ricotta pound cake would definitely work in a bundt pan. Grease pan well.

Pat, when in SA I had a hot chocolate......

with chilli. I have never had anything so delicious...hot, creamy with a bite and chocolaty. I found some choc/chilly spice in the supermarket yesterday and wondered what to do with it. Apart from trying to make hot chocolate ..using good choc , of course....and I think I will try to add it to a mousse....any pointers on this from what you had to eat would be welcome.
Thanx

My Saturday six... Happy Fourth!

1. I made tabbouleh, last night. It's a lot of chopping, but it's the best summer staple ever. smileys/smile.gif The last time I made it was in Prague, and the bulgur here now looks strange--smaller, maybe?

2. A friend of mine in Prague told me over breakfast that when her family goes to her husband's village on the weekend, she keeps being begged by villagers to teach them her apple pie recipe. I love this. If she learned Czech, she'd have a cooking show there in a heartbeat.

3. Sort of wish we were at my family's for the 4th, in Colorado, where my dad is grilling, as usual.

4. Made a French sugar tart for the second time in two weeks. This time, it worked, but it turns out to be bread with a sugar topping. (That entire package of yeast should have made this clear to me.)

5. Came back from Prague armed with my mother-in-law's cookbooks and family recipes, which I'll use for a project as soon as I get through writer's block.

6. Just put spicy cornflake-coated chicken in the oven. Hey, if you can't grill, and it's too hot to broil, this is the next best thing, in my book!

Hope you all have a happy and safe 4th with family and friends! smileys/smile.gif
