My Star-Spangled Saturday Six

My Saturday six

Extra refer in laundry room flooded under the crispers. 2 hour job for dh.

Did three loads of laundry, prepped for a great dinner, ironed, loaded RV with my clothes for a short jaunt.

We are going to the coast...family emergency.

DH finished the living room and dining room painting...only three more rooms to go

I plan on reading Valerie Bertinelli's new book while we travel tomorrow

The coast will be nice and cool to my skin...and seeing dh's wonderful cousins.

I guess I would add it to the melting chocolate and taste for bite. The chillies used at Dos Caminos

were subtle -- you didn't feel the heat until you swallowed the mousse. It was so good, and so darned unexpected -- I had to ask the waiter to find out what kind of pepper they used! All they would say was Oaxacan -- let me know how the spice you got works!

hi Sandra, I don't remember exactly what it was but..

Loupy had some pretty serious health issues way back. might have been heart problems. I was concerned when she stopped posting on Gail's.

I lost the contact info I had for her and can only hope all is well.

My Saturday & Sunday six

But first I have to throw in a Thursday. As you know my “happy” day is Thursday which is the one day that I cook at Apron’s at Publix. So last Thursday was BBQ Baby Back Ribs and a fresh corn Risotto. Recipe called for the ribs to be coated in a blackening seasoning and then a mixture of apple cider and BBQ sauce, enclosed in heavy tin foil and baked at 450 for 40 minutes. I do mine in a very low oven for hours and I was skeptical for sure. I cooked them for an hour (shhh…don’t tell anyone) and they came out great! And the micro fresh corn risotto was delicious…not a real risotto but great none the less. I sold everything all day long! Huge

OK, Sat.
Just the two us so very low keyed. We did ribs, Bush’s baked beans ( hey, I’m learning how to take some help with a few things. ;0)) and coleslaw. I baked the beans with the ribs for several hours so they really came out great.

We live on a water way and fire works were terrific. Someone across from us and about 5 houses down took a small boat and anchored it in the center of the lake. From it they put on the most incredible display for about 40 minutes! It was unbelievable!

Later we watched a great, silly, fun, interesting movie. Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller, Robin Williams and more. I think it would be a great teaching tool for parents to talk about American history. Man, this morning I had to do a Google on Jedediah smith and Sacajawea. John and I disagreed about her, I was wrong. I want to watch it again.

Today for breakfast we had scrambled eggs with yellow squash and sausage patty for breakfast. One of our favorites and has been a long time so we enjoyed it so much.

Dinner tonight is Surf & Turf…Grilled Rib-eye steak and grilled Lemon-Rosemary Shrimp skewers.

I won’t be kicked out for making one of my six a Thursday will I? ;0)

Wedding Weekend Six:

Friday night was the rehearsal at Saints Peter & Paul's church on Columbus Square in SF. The same church where my grandparents got married in 1921! We are SO glad our son and his wonderful bride chose this church!

Then on to Bocce Cafe for the rehearsal dinner. A wonderful choice and husband gave a great speech/toast.

Saturday a Fourth of July Wedding! Wonderful, traditional and so special with touches of the blending of two family cultures.

Reception was at Marines Memorial Hotel which has the ship's bell from my Dad's WW II naval vessel (the San Francisco, of course!) Great venue and dinner.

Next day nice breakfast on the top floor of the hotel w/ small family group and wonderful view.

Espresso in North Beach (Caffe Roma ...I had a cannoli---naturally) while waiting for next mass at the church.

Another goodbye to happy couple & both families.
Plus we got leftover wedding cake! I mention this specificly because I didn't get to have any of the cake at the reception I was so busy with visiting and such... and feeling guilty about not getting to taste it.

My Weekend Six...

For the 4th, my red white and blue theme was.... Me! Red: I rouged my hair Saturday, I think I'll stay red for a while, seems to be attention-getting. White: my lily-white gams! Haven't seen sun in a year I think! And the foggy weather here isn't going to change this. Speaking of fog: Blue: my toes! So foggy on Saturday but fortunately a drive across the Golden Gate to Marin yielded warm balmy weather, I even sat in sunshine for a while. With a margarita, ahhh, good.

Friday night I baked my very first loaf of sourdough, I made a white whole wheat Boule with a little agave in it. It was huge, sour and tangy, moist inside, crusty and crunchy inside. Just a little dense but I think that the whole wheat dough needs a touch of instant yeast for better rising. It was a proud moment, and the best toast Saturday and Sunday. I'm growing more starter for bread for the weekend.

I made Greek/Thai rib sauce, using Dawn_MO's recipe Traca recommended. I quadrupled it for 4 fat racks of ribs and added a pot of fig jam and a lot of Vidalia onions and some honey. It was fantastic, just what I was aiming for. Next time, more figs.

I made a spice rub and baked the ribs in foil the night before and then they got warmed up, smoked and glazed at the party in Marin. So succulent! They totally disappeared. Yay!

I also made my mom's Memorial Day Baked Beans, which I couldn't find the recipe and panicked! I left it at my ex's. Fortunately mom was home and we had a great chat about holidays and it was worth it 10,000 times over that panicky feeling misplacing a family treasure. I was supposed to put it in the menues section and never did so I'll fix that now.

So once again cooking was my gold plated invitation to a group of strangers who quickly became fast friends. the folks at the party were very nice and I had fun and we bonded over ribs et al, amazing how good food is a unifier for almost any situation!

Today, I rested and finished knitting a very cool sock for my mom and ate pho for dinner. A most excellent weekend!

I have only had one cup of coffee and my memory

is going downhill at an alarming rate lately, but are you sure that is my Greek/Thai BBQ sauce? I don't recall posting a GT BBQ sauce. What a good idea to bake the ribs the night before and then just grill and glaze. I will defiitely be doing that next time.

According to latest news you need 5-6 cups of coffee/day to stave off Alzheimer's. >>>>>
