My Weekend Six

Actually all in one day. I decided to give my

kids gifts from the kitchen (you know those articles that always appear in mags around Christmas). So on the last night of Hanuka (last night) I gave the following - all things I had

never made before and so I had a fun day from

6 am to about 5 pm.

1. My d-i-l - loves sweet - chocolate pecan

cookie bars - excellent

2. Her sister (who generally is with us on Fri. night) orange marmelade muffins - very good

3. My daughter - Velvet Lemon cake - (sugarless)

I tried shortbread hearts by the barefoot Contessa with splenda but had to throw the whole

thing out as it was impossible to work with. I

got this one off the splenda site.

4. My son - lemon pepper cheesecake. Good

5. My s-i-l Julgoog - excellent

6. Dinner -from 5 pm to 7 (with the exception of the pate which I made the night before) pate, split pea soup, spagetti and

meatballs and hanuka cookies for dessert for the kids.

It is a lovely holiday and we enjoyed the whole week.

Mine

Made AGM's orange/pecan biscotti. Some for a hostess gift tonight and some to take to CA tomorrow

Ditto more Oatmeat/Choc Chip cookies

About to start packing for 10 day trip to CA to visit my daughter and family. Three beautiful grandchildren are there. 13,11 and 6

Made 5 small loaves of Chocolate/Zuchini bread for favors for a small dinner party last night.

Enjoyed my DIL's pictures sent on her IPhone from the Climate Conference in Copenhagen where she has been translating for 2.5 weeks. Great close ups of many world leaders.

Watched a beautiful snow fall yesterday for 10 minutes until it turned to cold rain.

Happy Holidays everyone.

The Last Weekend Before Christmas Six, aiyeeeee!

Where did the time go? I leave Monday at 6 am to head to my parents on a variety of busses and trains just to get an hour away by car from my parents' home.

So much to do! I messed up with buying things online and have to add money to the bank and persuade them to accept a deposit on a Saturday. What kind of bank doesn't count a cash deposit immediately into your account anyway??

Just received my 12 gobs of Christmas, mmmm.

I should say the 10 Gobs of Christmas as I just snarfled 2 of them, the gingersnap raspberry with lemon and the strawberry basil shortcake gob is GONE!! nom nom nom I am going to try to not eat them all before I leave on Monday, but who knows!!!

Tonight I am making sweet potato latkes - baked in the oven on a silpat with apple sauce and smoked salmon. Then I'm off to a Hannakuh party at a friends, how sweet of them to invite me, a non-tribe member!

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up my pork share for the freezer from Oakland, BARTing over with my little roller bag and meeting a few friends for coffee and perhaps lunch, fun!

I think my Sunday dinner is going to be Molly Katzen's sweet and sour tofu with oranges on brown rice. I also have to pack my personal things, and all the Christmassy stuff. I was able to get my giant roller duffle bag repaired, so I can get to the bus/trains without killing my back and wrists!

Some advise please - a friend has a connection at a camera company, she can get me the point and shoot camera with the Leica lens I have been drooling over for $150 off the retail price- out the door. It's a lot of money still but I have a Christmas check. I was planning on saving it for a rainy day, especially given the economy and my lack of employment. But this is a terrific opportunity and having a camera would really help with my blog and the book I'm helping a friend write...

What do you all think??

Ok, on that note then, what point & shoot cameras are good as mine has been kidnapped

by DH (and DD kidnaps both of them from both of us) & I love having both my Canon DSLR and a quick point and shoot. Plus DD will need a good camera when she goes off to college next year - she is very artistic and needs a good camera for several reasons.

Weekend Six - Ha that is only the beginning

Still have shopping to do - not too much but still....

Still need to do some baking as I haven't done any

Christmas tree still not up (do you see a pattern here?)

Secret santa reveal pot luck at work tomorrow - crockpot cassoulet unless someone has a wonderful new recipe for a main dish to share that is easily 'transportable, warmable, etc.' as we have no kitchen.

Family & friends cookbook still not done but I AM going to distribute at least a 'first unedited' galley copy this year!!!

Was going to start a 'new' family tradition of soup and salad or something very easy this year (SIL does it and that is where DH & his sons usually went for Christmas before we were married so if it's good enough for them....) but mom called to say she had a whole pan of dressing in the freezer left over from one of her events and she has her 'guy' smoking a turkey breast. Oh well that's almost as easy. Just need a few sides and gravy.

Then there's wrapping, cleaning, work, chef's social tomorrow night, dog got his winter trimming but needs a good bath, grocery shopping.

AND something(s) to keep DH busy the next two weeks he's off to keep him out of trouble with me, keep DD from calling me constantly because he's driving her nuts and keep him from further straining his back and getting in more pain.

My Weekend Six

1) Made Zucchini risotto and mushroom risotto this weekend. The Zucchini risotto rocked!

2) I've made an early New Years Resolution this year: I am cutting back on meat. Both for health reasons and political reasons. I will be starting on Cristmas Eve, switching from lamb chops to cod! Wish me luck smileys/wink.gif

3) I am nowhere near being ready for Christmas, but I did manage to get Christmas dinners menu planned today (see #2)

4) I am writing my grocery shopping list for Cristmas tonight. Chocolate, wine, apple cider...get my drift? smileys/wink.gif

5) I just learned that goose fat has a high smoking point and also contains Omega 3. (My source: Nigella Lawson)

6) I made Nigella Lawson's Brussel sprouts with pancetta, chestnuts, butter and Marsala wine yesterday. It tasted terrific as a side dish with chicken.

Eva - you might be interested in Mark Bittman's book Food Matters

I saw him recently here in town and he talked about the switch. He's vegan until 6 then anything goes. I am working my way there for both health and social issues.

My Six

Only six? Seems like this time of year I never sit still anymore.

1. Got together all of my recent preserves and relishes to see what to give who for extra little gifts.

2. Made some cut-out sugar cookies using an old family recipe - not originally intended for cut-outs, but they I improvised and they worked just beautifully.

3. Bought some silk poinsettas bushes in a gold flowerpot and they are now standing like sentries along side the front door next in the snow and a wreath on the front door with a spotlight shining on everything. Pretty.

4. Made Jamie Oliver's chicken (I have FK bookmarked and it's the only post that autocompletes everytime I type in "finer..." so I finally decided to try it. It was a post from Suz from the spring.

5. I want to make some sort of impossible pie this week - any suggestions?

6. Getting ready to watch the Survivor finale with munchies left over from a book club holiday party last week. Cranberry-brie dip, French cheese puffs, and tuna-cream cheese spread. I'm hooked on that show!
