My Weekend Six

Mowed the lawn and caught up on some yard work now that it's a little cooler. Still no yellow flowers on my heirloom tomato plants that I started from seeds... I'm getting worried. They're nice and full and tall, but not a single bud.

Came inside and made some pineapple cheesecake squares to take to work bake sale on Monday. Procedes go to local SPCA - I thought it was a great idea, and one of the guys makes delicious chocolate mint cookies, so I know what I'll be buying...

Took a nice, big basket to the backyard to pick the last of my wild red mulberries, only to find that they're all gone already. Where did the summer go!

Looking forward to blueberry season and making some healthy goodies with them.

Also planning on which of MarshaTbay's recipes to make tomorrow... so many good ones, especially the nut pates and the cheese/fruit ones. Thanks again, Marsha! Maybe the date-goat cheese snacks or the goat cheese and sun-dried tomato appetizer.

Roast chicken with sweet potatoes tomorrow I think. SIL's birthday and we're having her family over for dinner. I still need a green vegetable - maybe sauted zucchini with corn and golden raisins. Sounds strange, but the mix of bland and sweet with a little butter is very good.

Happy summer weekend, everyone!

My weekend six

I am tired but happy doing the Farmer's Market. I am doing well in a short amount of time. The wonderful flower woman, who is one of the reasons I used to go to this market, loves my food and is sending customers over left and right. Yay, and thank you Kathy!

Played Hearts with my abbreviated family, and saw my son's "killer instinct" come out. Lots of fun.

Bought the tiny new potatoes from the FM and loved them. They are about an inch in diameter.

I am tired. It is hard work, harder than I remember doing the FM.

I bought some corn today, excited about making it for lunch tomorrow.

My stepdaughter and grandkidlets are in CA at Disneyland. We are missing them all and waiting for them to get back. I am getting updates though, and they are having fun.

My weekend six

My son and family returned from their vacation in Disneyworld and NYC and demanded Fri. night dinner for themselves, inlaws and dil's twin brother.
Made spagetti and meatballs. Made a ton and froze some for DH when I am on vacation next week.
Made a large Arab-Israeli salad. This can be time consuming but got one of those onion choppers and used it for some of the veggies.
Tomatoes, though, should still be done by hand.

Stopped looking at a coconut cake recipe from
an old Gourmet and MADE It. I have been looking at it for years. It was light and delicious.

Also made for DH - brisket, NLB's chicken casserole, chicken soup.
And cooked up some chopped meat and turkey mix and froze it for my 16 yr. old cat who will not eat anything else just now.

Having a quick and easy steak today and no other cooking!! And no going into the kitchen either.

Just curious - I've heard it's a regional think, but we boil them in salt water and call

them salt potatoes, served with melted butter (not for the sodium- or fat-conscious!) - anyone else around the country hear of doing this?

I understand it's because we live in an area that once had a lot of salt mines underground, which I never really understood because we are 200 miles from the nearest ocean! Hmmmm?

My six: Saturday was the opening of Dipnetting on the Kenai for Reds(Sockeye)

We went out and came back with 9 reds, average 10-12 pounds. Not a big haul---but plenty enough when we're out there cleaning and fileting and packaging them for the freezer.

got a kick out of watching our friend's 12 yo grandson manning the net and hauling in his 3 reds of the day. When those big fish hit the nets, you get a surge of adrenaline and it takes 2 to pull that fish into the boat. so exciting. and, when one "gets away", oh so sad!

dinner Sat night was prime rib on the grill and twice baked potatoes. we had enough of anything salmon for the day!

first grilled filet of the season on Sunday---so yummy with just some Creole Seasoning. Totally impromptu BBQ with friends who brough over marinated pork chops and we had the leftover potatoes and salad and grilled corn. very beautiful sunny evening.

it was in the 70s on sunday and also today. doesn't get much better here with bright blue skies and sunshine, except it was back to work for me today.

I saved one twice baked potato for my lunch today. yumyum.

My Weekend Six (are you sure you really want to know)? Both FR and NFR, Chanelling Chatty Kathy

Started taking piano lessons again after 40 years, and had my 4th lesson on Friday afternoon. I feel like a clutz, trying to get my old, stiff fingers to play in unison.

Bad news about my piano, however, it's a big, old upright that was my Grandmother's. I've had it since I was 10, and it has travelled with me for 60 years. Hired a piano tuner to tune it, and learned that it is so old and deteriorated that it can't be tuned. I've practiced on it, tolerating it out of tune, for the past month, but when the piano tuner tried to tune it, something "gave" in one of the strings, and now I get a "THUNK" when I play the "C" below Middle C. It's impossible to practice with it now. The tuner said he will come back next week and try to fix it, and I have a portable keyboard that I can use for practice, but I am broken-hearted that I can't restore my old friend. Local piano restorer won't touch it, and it would cost thousands to restore. I can buy a new one for a lot less, but I'm grieving for the memories and the special spot in my living room where is resides.

Picked up brisket and ribs for Friday dinner from a new BBQ place. The owner is an industrialist who lost his job last year, and is reinventing himself, utilizing his love of cooking with a big customized BBQ smoker he designed. Will do all I can to help him make it.

Made comfort sides to go with the BBQ, rutabagas, green beans, corn bread, and a fabulous corn pudding that I'll post below.

Attended a local community theater Sunday matinee production of "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940". This was a zany, murder mystery farce that kept the audience laughing every minute of the show. Live theater is one of my passions, and we have a host of very talented performers and volunteers who make shows like this possible.

Dinner after the show was at a new, locally owned restaurant, Meditteranean (sp) style, located on Mobile Bay. DH and I shared bruschetta, salad and Frutti di Mare, shrimp, clams and mussels in a tomato "broth", over linguine. Everything was fresh and delicious. Even with sharing one serving, we had leftovers to bring home. Why don't restaurants serve half as much, and cut the price? Their bread was amazing...they bake fresh round loaves every monring, and serve them, slathered in butter and herbs, in a basket. I know, I know, it should be EVOO, but the butter was better! Can't wait to go back, although it is an hour away. We watched a beautiful sunset over the Bay while we dined. No sign of the oil yet, but we are all waiting.
