Need Low-carb help getting started. How did you do it???

I'm so impressed with the excellent results you've each shared. Food is a really hard issue

It's not something you can put down and walk away from. You can't go to a drug rehab and get detox'd and cut it out forever. You must eat. Period.

So every day you fight The Battle. Every day you bring food to mouth and your brain has its say-so. I've battled food my whole life and don't see that ever stopping.

Heck, I don't even lose my appetite/weight when I'm sick. Everyone gets a bonus "5-pound drop" with the flu. Not me.

Many, many thanks. You are all an inspiration and have a generous heart for sharing.

My two cents for low carb vegetarian ideas

Trying to loose weight on a low carb low fat-diet when you don't eat meat is a challenge, but this is what I've come to so far:

Even though every expert will tell you that breakfast is important, I'm no breakfast person and I just can't eat that early in the morning. So I've stuck to my regular breakfast of a double latte without sugar. And that is a double latte as in a European double latte: a double shot of espresso, with less milk. Not like the double latte I got in NYC. It was basically a pint of latte (they doubled both the espresso and milk). It could have lasted me a week! smileys/smile.gif

Lunch is hard. Like Marilyn, I eat at my desk because there's no time for lunch breaks those days. I always bring vegetables and hummus, but I have found that yogurt sprinkled with a mixture of nuts and seeds will fill me up nicely. I also bring an apple - and for long days, I'll bring a smoothie.

I'm not a salad person, because I have yet to find a way to put the salad leaves in my mouth without getting dressing all over my face. So, for dinner I eat roasted vegetables with quinoa and feta cheese, or falafel with broccoli or brussel sprouts, or vegetable soup, or woked vegetables with a tiny bit of brown rice on the side, or haloumi with baby spinach, tomatoes and cucumber. Fritatta is also great for dinner.

I serve tatziki with dinner instead of sauce, but also sour cream mixed with green onions or pesto.

I have never tried low carb before so I have no idea what to expect but based on the posts above I hope it will give me some results smileys/smile.gif

Eva, if you eat salad with chopsticks it's SO much easier and a lot less messy smileys/smile.gif

I don't follow any plan per se - but I avoid processed/white carbs as much as possible

If I eat bread/pasta/crackers etc I have problems.

Otherwise, I do not restrict any fruit or veggies - otherwise I would not have been able to stick with a healthier eating style.

The things that have helped me the most are what others have mentioned:

Being prepared with foods so I don't have the temptation to grab something I will regret later. My saving graces are hummus with carrots or red pepper strips for dipping, avocados sliced on the whole grain sandwich thins, and tofu sauce and veggies.

I do not use artificial sweeteners of any kind.

I use the full-fat versions of anything I eat - can't do the low-fat thing.

I love the Pure Protein brand protein bars - I eat one every day. They are filling and taste good, too.

Salad - I love salad but hate prepping it. I eat a lot of salad made with romaine lettuce, dried cranberries, feta or crumbled goat cheese, slivered almonds and honey mustard dressing - this is on my plate 4 -5 nights per week, along with some kind of protein.

I try to stay at about 1300 kcal per day intake to lose about 1 lb per week. I have lost ~75 lbs in 18 months - works for me!
