Need recommendations for ice cream maker - I know this has been discussed before, but

my Krups La Glaciere is now kaput, and I need to buy a new ice cream maker fast! I'm considering either the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment, the Cuisinart 1 1/2 quart Ice Cream Maker, or the latest Krups model, but don't know which one to get. I've heard the Cuisinart doesn't make the creamiest ice cream - that it's a little grainy, but that could just be a few people's experiences and not the majority. For those of you who own any one of these machines, what are the pros and cons?

Hi Meryl, my mixed experience with Cuisinart is probably attributable to user error, but the one con

that is not subjective is that there is no automatic shut-off.

i got a KA attachment this year, and overall am happy with it. i find it easy to use, though it's a

bit sloppy getting the mix into the bowl while the paddle is churning - you don't have alot of elbow room between the head and the top of the freezer bowl. it only turns out 'soft-serve' ice cream - you must freeze it in the freezer if you want if firmer. it handles chunky ingredients quite well. and i appreciate not having another gadget to store, just the bowl which i keep in the deep freeze and the paddle and a little doo-hicky that fits over the rotating thing.
happy shopping!

I'm so used to the Krups, which automatically stops when the ice cream is ready. On the other hand,

I just checked the reviews for the Cuisinart on several sites, and overall, it's gotten high ratings. Plus, it's the right size for the top shelf of my freezer - the KitchenAid is definitely too tall!

I've been slightly leaning toward this one, but I noticed the height, and it looks like it would

be too tall for the top shelf of my freezer. Now, if only I had a second freezer....

the bowl is just about 7 1/2" tall and about 11" at it's widest. funny, dh thought i was

giving it away when i went down to the freezer with the tape measure! you know, i got this freezer as a hand-me-down (it's almost as old as i am), and it's so great to have the extra space. something to think about if you have the space for one.

Hi Meryl - my model is a few years old, so I don't know if the dimensions will have changed at all.

Overall dimensions assembled are 9" wide & 12" tall. The bowl itself is 7" wide at the top (the widest point) & 5-5/8" tall. (Amazon lists the overall dimensions as 10"w x 10-1/4"d x 15"h, but this may just be the box dimensions.)

Hi Meryl - I have a Cuisinart ICE-40 and an ICE-50 Model..I have to

say that I prefer the 40 model. (It's the double canister unit that you need to prefreeze.)
I purchased the compressor unit because I wanted to have the flexibility of making ice cream/sorbet without having to prefreeze the bowls. This unit is everything they say about it.
It's heavy, LOUD, takes up lots of counterspace and, in my opinion, makes inferior ice cream. I found myself frustrated with this purchase and now just use the pre-freeze bowls.
I'll probably buy the ICE-20 model when this one breaks down.
Good luck with your purchase!
I highly recommend the Chocolate PeanutButter Ice Cream recipe from The Perfect Scoop. To die for!

i just remeasured and mine really is only 7"tall! maybe there are different sizes?

there is an attachment for the base which is needed for some models, but even including that in the height would only add .5" max. hmmmm.
it doesn't have an auto shut-off. you run it on the stir setting of the mixer and just turn it off when ready or whenever you want to check on it.

Sounds like Amazon got the wrong info. Someone on another site also said their KitchenAid wasn't

much taller than the Cuisinart. Thanks, wild!

Hello CactusSue, I see you're a new member. Glad to see you here, and thank you for the info!

Thanks, Maria - that one is much more $ than I wanted to spend! I just ordered the new Krups.
