New 1,000 sq house in the woods: Wood or tile in kitchen?

The floor plan is very open. Kitchen, living room, dining is just one big room. Two small bedrooms and 2 smaller baths off the back.

I was thinking of just running wood through the entire house (other than baths), but worried about kitchen wetness. But I'm also worried about the coldness of tile in the winter and the transition between wood and tile in such a small area.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

 
We recently redid our kitchen and put in oak flooring. It is very easy to

keep clean. I'm a very messy cook, but the polyurethane finish they put on now is great. I just mop it with a damp ecloth mop. We had ceramic tile in our house before, and it cracked in several places.

 
We had tile in our last house and it is very unforgiving. Oak flooring all around in

our new mountain home.

It looks great and seems to resist water and stains.

I've had it for 10+ years, no trouble at all, much better than tile. I still like the patterns of linoleum or tile in a kitchen, so this was a great "compromise" as opposed to a solid wood. The transition between the great room floor and this is fine, even though they are different.I get so many compliments on it. Cleans like a dream, easy underfoot. Just be sure they finish it properly with a few coats of sealer.

Wood. Absolutely.

I live in a very humid place. No air conditioning- it rains a lot here. Don't worry about "wetness" with wood. We have Brazilian Cherry floors in the great room, kitchen and down all our halls. I absolutely LOVE it. I had tile a long time ago in a different house and hated it with a passion. Wood, wood, wood forever!

 
We put wood in the home we built 10 years ago and love it!

I'd never go back to tile. Only negative is - and it's a negative about me too - is I tend to drop things ALOT. So I've get quite a few dents in the floor.

 
You've already decided, but I vote "No" on tile - hard on your body and on anything you drop. smileys/smile.gif

 
We almost put in cork floors . . . then remembered we have cats who were sharpening their claws in

eager anticipation of shredding it at first opportunity. We ended up with polished concrete (shred THAT, yuh little buggers!)
