New ka not for me…

The new 7 qt feather pink ka arrived today, and I can share without even plugging it in, it’s going back.

If for no other reason alone, the attachments are so lightweight they feel like they’re made of plastic. I had to tap it to see if it was metal, and I’m still not sure if it’s some very thin coat of metal over plastic because they feel so lightweight. They really don’t seem up to the job. This was specifically the dough hook. I haven’t pulled the flat batter out of the Styrofoam, but it looks extremely flimsy. The wire whip came attached to the machine and it looks like shiny metal.

The matte finish is simply not to my liking. It looks cheap and I didn’t realize that they made all the metal finishes matte. The beauty ring, the handle, and the bowl all a matte finish as well. The attachments cover being blank looks weird to me as well. I think if it was a shiny finish with chrome accents I’d be able to make it work, but as you can see in the picture I put a vintage pink bowl that’s very similar to my pink appliances next to it and the mixer just has a bit of a purpleish cast to it, which, if I loved it, I’d probably live with, but I don’t love it. And the whole thing just looks cheap. The only good news is it fits under my cabinet.

i’ll start keeping my eye out for a used/refurbished unit with a DC motor, the oddly extreme short run of the 700 pro line or the commercial 8 quart. Because not only does this model look cheap. The reviews on it are not good and apparently customer service at KitchenAid, per reviews, leaves much to be desired.

i posted this in the other thread, but it was glitchy, so reposting in new thread.

my phone color corrects this to be a prettier pink than it is in person. It has a definite lavender cast to it that you can’t see in the photos and it looks much duller in person.

oh...if you've heard customer service is bad, will you have any issues returning it? I was interested if it has the burnt rubber smell like mine (at high speed)

PS: I have to--ashamedly admit--that I'm quite happy with my cobalt blue once I've wiped all the icing and splotches off it.

This is why I bought it from kohl’s. You can return in store and there’s one not far from me. It was more expensive than I’d found, but seemed like the easiest return policy. However, I don’t think they can be returned if used.

The reviews I’ve read online at the ka website for customer service if bought from them sound like nightmares. I’ve also noticed the warranty covers parts, with no mention of labor. It’s one of the reasons I’m going to look for a version w the dc motor, those overall seem to have less issues. Those use to have a longer 5 yr warranty as well, but no more. I think they aren’t owned by the same parent company anymore.

I‘d look on the mr. mixer website for burning smell issues, he has so many repair videos including complete rebuilds. Plus, he’s made some parts of his own he sells that solve some known issues. I’m going to get a gasket from him to help my tilt head from bouncing, and he has gaskets that fit on the lift head pins for when bowls can’t be adjusted enough to not mix bottom of bowl ingredients. (Think you were having that issue?)

While I still need a bigger ka for smb, I’m going to do some fixing on my tilt head to make it work more like new. His video on how to repair the tilt head lock pin, makes me think I can do this myself. Plus, it diagnosed what was wrong (and why it went wrong).

Because I’ve gone down the rabbit hole w his videos, I’m guessing the burning smell might be an oil leak. These mixers are made to leak some oil, and have areas to catch it, but sometimes it gets near the motor. It might be as easy as opening the cover and wiping a drip area where some puddled. He likely has a video on it.

This photo shows how it is…less pink, for lack of my vocabulary to explain it. That’s a Vernonware “tickled pink“ bowl circa 1958-1965, along with my 1959 oatmeal speckled kitchen tile and the base of the feather pink mixer.
