New Year's Eve ideas?

My next suggestion was going to be seeds, but I guess they're a step ahead of me.

I can understand how they don't want non-native species taking over the continent, But if they'd ever tasted a really good chile relleno they'd make an exception for poblanos.

Was just going to say I could bring you some in January,

Sandra. Oh wait, do they have seed-sniffing dogs at customs clearance? yikes.

I dunno, and don't think I want to find out. Although, maybe I'll contact

customs and see if I can possibly bring seeds in to Australia. That is, if Sandra has a garden spot in which to grow them. Sandra?

Oh wait, now I see why they are strict on what can enter the country via mail

and I'm sure customs too. In this case it's to protect the country from the possibility of introducing "some of the world’s most serious pests and diseases into Australia, devastating our valuable agriculture and tourism industries and unique environment". Understandable.

I think it is understandable, given how unique the biology of Australia is.....

but a life without chiles? Oh Sandra, how can we help?

Rec: Cajun Shrimp...Since seafood is readily available and inexpensive then this

would be great. A friend gave me this recipe many years ago and I love this sooo much! It is so beautiful in a big glass bowl with the lemon slices tucked in. When it is warm I always set the bowl into another container of ice. The only drawback...I have found the shrimp tails in some pretty strange places.

Cajun Shrimp

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

2 quarts Salted Water
1/2 lg. Lemon, sliced
3 pounds Shrimp, cleaned/unpeeled, tails left on
1 cup Vegetable Oil
2 tablespoons Tabasco Sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons Garlic, minced
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon Seafood Seasoning,French's®
3/4 teaspoon Basil,Dried,Ground
3/4 teaspoon Oregano
3/4 teaspoon Thyme,Ground
1 teaspoon Parsley,Fresh,Chopped
1 head Lettuce

Clean shrimp by removing head and legs. Place into boiling water and cook until done ( about 3-5 Minutes ) drain and put ice into shrimp to cool them as quick as possible. Continue cleaning them by removing the shell and vein ( leave the tail and last segment of shell on ).
Combine the remaining ingredients except lettuce, beat with a wire whisk. Pour over shrimp; toss. Cover; chill 8 to 24 hours. Turn occasionally. Drain and serve in a lettuce lined shallow bowl. Serve cold.
The hot sauce seems to get diluted by the oil so you might need to adjust the amount of hot sauce to your individual taste.

They are so strict...

They won't take you into quarantine, but they will definitely take away the oofending items and maybe fine you -

It's really not worth it, but thanks for the offer Pat...besides, I thankfully don't have a garden, I live in an apartment that can be hermetically sealed and air conditioned as needed! We have a wondeful wrap around terrace that overlooks the harbour and Pat's ship when she gets here, but no garden!! Not even a potted plant.

I'm not a big fan of "nature" and the "unique biology" of Australia, as Joe so delicately puts it, scares the crap out of me!! What with all the poisonous spiders, snakes, toads, jellyfish... the sharks, the giant fruit bats with 2 foot wingspans, well, the list goes on and on...

As for the chiles, I'm going to call the Mexican embassy tomorrow and see what they do about getting their chiles....
