screens, starting next week through May 15. The recorded performances are from San Francisco Opera and La Scala. Web info is at www.ravemotionpictures.com and www.the biggerpicture.us/opera. Rave site does not have a complete list of theaters, but local Rave sites show the performances and dates. Whoopee! I can hardly wait to get my Opera fix!

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately no where near me. However....

I have been enjoying the Operas from the Met at a theater nearby. Our small theater has been sold out and we are so grateful for the opportunity.

Are you sure? The Met broadcasts are not available anywhere near me, but the SF/LaScala shows are.

in four theaters within an hour of me. The Rave site doesn't list all the theaters, and some belong to the Carmike chain, so that's why they aren't listed. If I get any better info, I'll let you know.

Me either, but the search is limited to 40 miles and Kansas City is farther.

I so wish it would be in K.C. If you can find it on your site, please let me know. I would love to go. Thanks1

The Met shows are also being b'cast here--but good opera seats here costs less than Met-tv tix smileys/wink.gif

The Rave site showed no theaters in MA. the Bigger picture site showed theatres in

CT, RI and NH but none in MA. I live on Cape Cod and our theatre chain is Regal. A small independent theatre in Dennis is showing the Met operas. Since we went 70 miles to Swansea last year for a performance we are mighty grateful for our 12 mile journey this year. Hope he can keep it up. Grateful for small favors.

A little note about the broadcasts....

As a former opera staffer, I have heard that people sometimes are surprised when they see the broadcasts. Of course the sound quality is amazing which is the whole point, but sometimes the film quality is not of the same caliber as a regular movie. Plus, you are seeing the artists close up with their stage makeup, which is meant to be seen from a distance. It's sometimes startling to see that makeup! I remember the first time I saw one of the prima diva's backstage and she is such a lovely lady, but the makeup was so heavy and garish, but if you saw her in regular street makeup on stage (or movie makeup), she would have looked washed out with no definition. Anyway, if you haven't seen this before some people have expressed a little surprise and disappointment at this, so I wanted to give you all a little heads up. I wish the opera had done these broadcasts when I was there but it's amazing how technology is increasing access to most people who never get to see a live performance. I am looking forward to seeing one of the Met's broadcasts, it was advertised at the theater when I was there this weekend to see a fluffy romance movie (Definitely Maybe).

Enjoy your opera!

Yes, Heather, the close-ups can be a little startling. I have written to the Met

to suggest that they go easy on the extremes. It not only destroys the illusion that we are at live theatre but also does no favors to wonderful singers who may not be in the full flush of youth. But I'm not complaining--they have always made this mistake in video taping. What I especially love are the intermissions--the interviews and the scene changing--you don't get that at the Met. Last week in "Manon" they interviewed the trainers of the animals--a dog and horses-used in the opera.

Oh how cool! I remember we had a horse once, what a mess it made, but it was great

having live animals on stage. I miss the back stage stuff like that...

The stage makeup is wild stuff, but ladies, if you ever need a eyeliner tip just PM me and I'll try to explain!

Maybe someone can help me ~ my Great-grandmother was: Maria DiPaulo a famous opera singer at the

turn of the 20th century and I have been searching everywhere for a record of hers. If anyone has heard of her or know how or where I can find a recording of hers I would be unbelievably grateful. I have searched everywhere and I keep turning up nothing.

Marianne, thanks so much for posting this...

We started going to the MET simulcasts at a neighborhood theatre and LOVE them! It's a really good experience. Although it may make it harder to go to an opera house and sit in one seat and enjoy opera anymore. I looked at your links but couldn't find anything on the LaScala performances. Do you have an info? Thanks!

Cincinnati Opera used to be at the zoo...

and they used a whole parade of animals for the triumphal scene in Aida, a tradition that continues. They've even had elephants on Music Hall's stage with two supernumeraries assigned to follow jumbo for "sanitation" reasons.
