or are planning to. Looking for more titles for my book club.

I am just finishing up "Cutting for Stone" by Abraham Verghese - I loved it! But quite long.

Also couldn't put down "City of Thieves", by David Benioff. Thought it was outstanding.

Thanks in advance - much appreciated!

The White Tiger: A Novel (Man Booker Prize) by Aravind Adiga

I read mostly history from the last century these days, and so far "Stalin, the red tsar" by Simon Montag Montefiore is one of the best books I've ever read. Now I'm reading about every day life in The USSR under Stalin, but I guess you are looking for novels, so here are some of the books I've read and loved:

The White Tiger: A Novel (Man Booker Prize) by Aravind Adiga
I love, love, loved this book. Couldn't put it down.

A town called Alice by Nevil Shute. Another book I couldn't put down.

A prayer fro Owen Meany by John Irving. Maybe the best book I've ever read.

Carlo Ruiz Zafon's first novel, "The Shadow of the Wind" was another book I couldn't put down. It plays out in Barcelona, Spain, and I have wanted to go there ever since I finished the last page.

The following books by Armistead Maupin: "Maybe the moon", "Tales of the city" and "Michael Tolliver lives". I love his caracters. Meupins strength is that he is very good at creating people you believe in.

I'm in total agreement with you about Owen Meany...

Incredible. My all time fav.

And thank you for the other titles, much appreciated

Fun story about reading. We were on vaca couple of weeks ago, to celebrate our anniv. Joanie, did

you see me waving!! ; ) Anyway, my mom gave me a few of her "shore" books. I packed a Nicholas Sparks book in our luggage. I was in the 2nd or 3rd chapter, and I realized that my dh wrote in the book! Normally, I would be so upset, we should never write in books, etc...BUT, he wrote some really sweet cute I heart yous; throughout the book. Who knew he could be such a romantic. It was very sweet, not that I would like him to do this to all of my books, but it was cute! Put a smile on my face!

Back from vacation; have a bookshelf filled with "Library books"; they are very old, been in the family for many, many years.... I have included Nick to the batch; which in itself, makes me crack up! These beautiful, old, leather books and a shore/sea worn paperback! I think I will keep him! : )

Aww, that was such a romantic thing to do. I vote for keeping him too smileys/wink.gif

Atlas of Unknowns by Tania James

It is an "Advance Reader's Edition" so I'm not sure how it did commercially, but I'm enjoying it. My sister sends me grocery sacks of books that she picks up at garage sales. Since she lives in a two-university town there are usually some good and different things in my packages.

For the upteenth time. "Charlotte's Web." Before that, also for the upteenth time,

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass"(annotated version).

Trout without a doubt you cannot be without otherwise you'll pout and

have to take another route (pronounce "rowt") and eat something that will make you stout.

I second the vote for City of Theives. Outstanding! Other recent favorites:

She Got Up Off The Couch - by the same author of A Girl Named Zippy. I listened to the audio version & thought this book was really funny. The narrator was priceless.

Farm City - Great writing, based on true story of an urban farmer who takes over a plot in a rough side of Oakland. The story flowed very well and I learned a lot.

Spoon Fed - by NYT food writer, Kim Severson. I just started reading this and it's very well done. She talks about the 8 female chefs who influenced her life--from Alice Waters to Ruth Reichl. Friends and mentors along her path, showing well-known and not so well-known people in a compelling light. And of course, Kim's a fabulous, funny writer.

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

It's a 12-week plan to boost creativity. My sister-in-law and I are working through the plan together. We just got started on Saturday and I'm making my way through the book in addition to following the program.

My WOW is the daily morning pages. Write longhand on 3 lined pages every morning, 1st thing (get up 1/2 hour earlier!) No requirement on what you write - just write 3 pages. I'm finding the 3-page "dump" is brushing away the cobwebs and clearing my head for the rest of the day. Exactly what I need! Colleen

My choice for May bookclub is The Help. next month The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
