NFRC: Heading to London for a month

Apparently, “Sunday Roast” is a thing here, so I opted to try one at a restaurant inside the train station next to my hotel: The Betjeman Arms.

The big Ascot hat-looking thing on the top is Yorkshire pudding. It was actually good, considering I thought it would be very eggy. It wasn’t. The edges were crispy, yet airy. Odd but in a good way. It came with a bunch of veggies underneath the Yorkshire pudding and meat slices: hispi cabbage (a Mary Berry thing and on almost all meals I’ve seen), carrots, potatoes, celery root and “lashing of gravy.”

Aye, me matey!

I caused a bit of consternation when I asked if they could wrap up the “other two-thirds” of my meal that I couldn’t finish. Turns out they don’t do take-away boxes, so I told them that was okay. A sous chef came out and asked if foil was okay and I said YES! It was tasty and it was expensive and I have room in my hotel mini bar, next to the obscenely priced wine, beer, candy, chips, and booze.

Sunday Roast: Done and done.

Then I had dessert by soaking up Millais, Sargeant, Waterhouse and Rossetti at the Tate Britain.
I saw lashing of gravy and thought, oh, another one of those weird sayings you have to be local to understand.

Oh…okay, I looked back at the menu and that is listed with the Sunday roast: Chicken.

So, per BBC, bread sauce:

Tomorrow, at an obscenely early time, I’m off for my “I think I’ll pop over to Paris for day” day.

Eurostar at 6:01 AM (I have to be there at 5:00 AM for Customs and passport control)
then…
Sainte Chapelle
Louvre
Notre Dame
then…
Eurostar back to London for a nightcap and possibly hydrocortisone (due to walking over 100 miles so far, resulting in a vicious attack of exercise-induced vasculitis, AKA Disney Rash, AKA Golfer’s Rash)

Bon voyage, mes amis.

But shopping!! Where is the shopping in this plan?
With that adventure, I can really help.

Well. That is something completely new to me. Thanks.
Have fun in Paris.

I’m now picturing bread lashed to a full gravy boat.

so it sounds like if one started to make American dressing/stuffing and changed midstream to be chipped beef on toast, without the beef. Sort of.

Hi all…

Trying to catch up.
May 5: There is SO MUCH CULTURE & culinary options here. But on this day I was simply hungry and wanted a good meal prepared by good chefs. Second Dishoom restaurant at Kings Cross did not disappoint.

Opted for chicken biryani with fresh cranberries, raita, and warm naan.

To balance restaurant meals, I buy salads or hot toasties at Pret a Manger.

And some days, dinner is a bag of Tyrell potato chips (crisps!) and a big Cadbury Dairy bar.

May 8: Tim Burton exhibit at Design Museum

I wanted to try the afternoon tea: a quirky homage to Burton. But not willing to pay £40 ($53) for quirky.

May 9: Kew Gardens

Lunch was a tasty wedge of roasted cauliflower topped with sautéed mushrooms and some unidentifiable, tasteless smear of white.

I’m returning tomorrow to see the tour about the 100+ movies and TV series that have filmed here.

Trust me. You’ve seen some of them.

Monday night: Sky Garden

I planned to order bar food once up in the garden, but they’ve changed their policy since it was published. Meaning my $20 entry fee provided a glass of wine/mock cocktail and the views. I hadn’t eaten lunch or dinner but the views were worth it.

I chose my entry time during sunset and later. The next few photos will be taken from the 35th floor of the building on the left.

Tuesday, May 13: So remember when I didn’t get to have lunch or dinner at the Sky Garden? That was okay because I had reservations the next day for here:

And while I was eating, look who showed up for a photo shoot for their Instagram page:

Yep…that’s Peggy (and my used napkin). She smiled at me, so I told her I had all her recipe books and thanked her for making me a better baker.

It was LITERALLY the buttercream icing on the top of this trip.
