NFRC: It's that time of year again. Looking for "beach book" suggestions. What have you

Beach Books and Plane Books NFRC.......

I have two suggestions for beach books, both light and amusing and recently in paperback. "Traveler" by Ron McLarty and "Plum Wine" by Angela Davis-Gardner. Both are interesting, well written and "non pulp fiction trash".
Today I went to my independant book seller who is excellent about suggesting perfect books for the occasion. I wanted a couple of "plane" paperbacks. They need to be absorbing, page turners, and worth reading. At least those are my definitions. She suggested "Arthur and George" by Julian Barnes and "Suite Francaise" by Irene Nemirovsky. I had read good reviews of both so I bought them. I will be off on a long trip soon and will have some good reads. I hope this helps a little, although you didn't say what your tastes were.

I'm really immature and I have insomnia, so...

any Harry Potter book is an easy read and relaxes me. Great beach read, in my childish opinion.

Joy Fielding's books (suspense) are great for beach/plane reading. Also, anything by

Alexander McCall Smith (human interest). Don't know if books by Barbara Fradkin are available in the US. She's a Canadian mystery writer who shouldn't be missed.

One Woman and the Creation of a Vineyard...

My absolute favourite summer read (I read it last summer ) is The Ripening Sun: One Woman and the Creation of a Vineyard, by Patricia Atkinson

I LOOOVED this book!!

I just plowed through the books by Ruth Reichl and I loved these also.

Books....NFRC

Hi!

I just finished 'Plum Wine' and I found the story most interesting except for the main character - I just didn't think there was substance to her. But a good book nonetheless (IMHO:). I thought Suite Francaise was a very good read.

I recently read "The History of Love' (I think the auther was Kraus? She wrote the Nanny Diaries too)- and loved it.

I belong to a couple of book clubs, one of which I lead at our local library. If I'm not cooking...I want to be reading:) Happy Readings

Deb

"Don't Let's go to the Dogs tonight"...this is quite a story.....I grew up in this country...

and am the age of the parents of the writer. However I did not, never ever, go through the life style that this young lady did. Nor did I have a parent who drank like she did...I could not put the book down. I remember the lifestyle as being gentle and wonderful. We did not have a bush war going on outside.
The girl mentioned in the book that had her legs blown off in a land mine is my cousin...she married and moved to SA.
This book is quite an eye-opener. It is written in a very unemotional way.
I have the next book "Scribbling the Cat" which I am longing to start.
The author now lives in the States.

joanietoo , I read this book a few years ago. I also thought it was quite a story. It was passed

around the family, and everyone enjoyed it. Maybe you can help me with another book I've been looking for. It's fiction and one I read several years ago. I was talking about it to a friend. It involved a women who was married to a really nasty man and they had a chicken farm. The setting was South Africa?

The last 3 I liked: Free Food For Millionaires- Min Jin Lee, Step on a Crack- James Patterson and

Cover-Up- Michele Martinez. For beach and plane I like what I call "release reading". Something light that you can lose yourself in.
I love this thread- lots of great suggestions!

Is it "The Poisonwood Bible"?

I haven't read it yet, but it's sitting on my "to read" pile. Unfortunately, I can only read on vacations. As much as I enjoy reading, I do it all day at work, and my eyes need the rest when I get home. *sigh*
