NFRC - So what Christmas movie do you have to see before it can be Christmas?

All time favorites: The Man Who Came to Dinner and Christmas in Connecticut...

The hit Moss Hart/George Kaufman Broadway play (Man who came to dinner) was given the royal star treatment by Hollywood with a cast that includes Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, Monty Woolley, Jimmy Durante, Billie Burke, Mary Wickes, and a host of others totally chewing the scenery up in over the top performances. A classic Christmas comedy set in the Currier and Ives snowy backdrop of Mesalia, Ohio.

Christmas in CT (Barbara Stanwyck) is one of those war years over the top nostalgia films that features a dreamy New England Christmas pastiche with tons of snow, sleighrides and sleighbells, a great big country farm house with Christmas parties, dinners (lots of food since the plot revolves around Barbara being a food writer), sing alongs, and general holiday merry making.

We've discussed "The Man Who Came to Dinner" before I'm sure. One of the best things Bette ever did

She's so understated while everyone else is having a field day. Anne Sheridan has me falling on the floor every time, and Billy Burke is just priceless. The bee-itchiest Christmas story ever imagined.

Yup. But her "Uncle Felix" is a chef from the old country

and feeds her all of the recipes and descriptions of the food that she writes about. She's trapped into inviting a soldier to Christmas dinner (who wrote to her publisher about how much he looked forward to reading her column while he was on the frontlines)at her fictional house in CT (which she writes about in her columns).

Panic ensues, but thhey quickly hatch a plan to come up with a house in CT, Uncle Felix is hoodwinked into making the dinner, her publisher shows up to watch her cook and report on the heart-warming story (she can't cook), and several romances are afoot.

Mayhem ensues. LOL

It is one of my all-time favorite movies. And yes, one of Bette's best

but as you stated, so understated which is usually the opposite for one of her roles. Can't wait to watch it this year!

Robin & The Seven Hoods. Frank, Dean, Sammy, Bing, Peter Falk, Victor Buono,

"Take if From Me, Don't Be A Do-Badder!"

The Holiday with Queen Latifah? great foodie flick too! I want to visit that resort. oh yes.
