NFRC: suggestions for driving from San Diego to near Myrtle Beach

DH booked us for 5 nights in a Starwood resort and is now leaving it to me to figure out how to get therein 5 or 6 days. I've already been to AZ and NM so am willing to move fast there. Maybe stop the first night in Tucson or blast on to Las Cruces. Never been to Texas or beyond. Would like to see either Charleston or Savannah. Also would like to stop in New Orleans for a few nights on the way back when we'll have a bit more leeway on time. Where should I start???

We used to drive from ABQ to Pittsburgh every year & it felt like an entire DAY to get through Texas

According to this link, it's 14 driving hours just for Texas. Of course, they're saying 60 miles an hour and I don't think even armadillos go 60 MPH there.

If you like to walk, Savannah has 14 small city parks laid out in a grid in the historic district & good food. Charleston's is also great for walking. I like taking the back streets to spy into the small, enclosed personal gardens. It has more historical sites and award-winning restaurants than Savannah. There's also a beautiful plantation outside of town.

Oh do go to Charleston. There is also a wonderful site near

MB--Brookgreen GArdens. It is a former plantation bought by the Huntington family. They lived there --across the road at Atalanta (also very worth a visit) and she was a prodigious sculptor. And then there is the art collection in amongst the gardens. It is a lovely lovely place.

Guess we should split Texas and visit Austin or San Antonio for a day.

The driving sounds insane!

Both Savannah and Charleson sound wonderful.

I hoe to persuade DH to add on a night in one of these so we can really enjoy the area.

I second the stop in one of those cities...

My sister lives in Charleston and we try to visit once a year. We'll be there next month for a week.

Since we don't like outstaying our welcome, we generally take a day or two and wander and Savannah has been a frequent stop. It may hit the list again this trip, unless we find another spot that has enough to keep us amused.

We'll be in Savannah in a couple of days--any recommendations for hotels or...

restaurants.

We Stayed at the Charleston Marina Hotel last week and loved the place. 82 Queen for dinner was marvelous--especially in the outdoor court area.

The East Bay Inn is very charming, comfortable and in a good location.

We have also stayed at the 1776 House, but that is a bit away from the main street and a bit funky.
If you want a high end dining venue, Elizabeth's on 37th will do that for you.

If you want some more local color, just wander along the water front, River Street has plenty to offer.

One last: I had my "grits" epiphany at Anson's in Charleston.

The "tasso gravy and shrimp over creamy grits" appetizer was so good I change my entree order and had it again for dinner.
