NFRC: suggestions for driving from San Diego to near Myrtle Beach

Thanks for the great suggestions! We still have time to work out our route...

We may be veering toward San Antonio instead of Austin but there is always the option on the home-bound journey. Anyone ever drive from Texas to Myrtle Beach?

Rudy's is a chain of BBQ eateries in gas stations. Don't let that deter you!

Their brisket is fabulous, sold by the pound and served on paper with the most unhealthy sliced white bread (Mrs. Baird's) they could find! Pickles and onions and as much sauce as you want found to the side. Their jalapeno sausage is great too, but not as good as Louie Mueller's in Taylor, which I think has the best sausage I have ever eaten.

For interior Mexican food, Curras can't be beat (not tex-mex) but for a fancier meal go to Fonda San Miguel's. Classic.

Olivia's on South Lamar is another favorite of ours. I'm getting homesick. And for breakfast, head to Magnolia for a Prima Dora omelet.

I'll shut up now. , No, not yet! If you are driving, go through Bastrop for a hamburger at the Roadhouse on Rt 21. Their jalapeno cream cheese burger made the magazines.Get the sweet potato fries on the side. ##

In Charleston, try not to miss the Hominy Grill and the Ordinary

Hominy Grill is an old (fabulous) standard, and the Ordinary is a newer place -- oyster bar and bistro -- getting nationwide attention, and I can say from experience, well deserved!
