NFRC: Survey - what kitchen gadgets/appliances are you sentimentally attached to?

Hmm, I'll have to think about that one...

A juicer, same as Ruth (above) described; my father's sharpening stone; my grandmother's strawberry huller; the old wooden roller; and countless drinking glasses and serving pieces from the 50's.

I have the glass white bowls from my grandmother's mixer. The mixer died long ago but I use

those straight-sided bowls for all kind of things and I think of her when I use them. I also inherited her Sterling hurrcane lamps with cut crystal chimneys. They're wonderful outdoors on a summer evening. Nana would roll over in her grave if she could see how tarnished they've become (she used to polish things compulsively) but I like them that way.

My mom wasn't very into material things. I have some crystal vases of hers which I enjoy, but mostly it's her recipes that I treasure.

My MIL broke her red bowl last summer; I searched the (m)

Internet and found a set for $40 at (I think???) Amazon.com. Didn't get the set as she wasn't THAT upset over the red bowl loss.

Alas I have no kitchen gadgets to which I'm sentimentally attached. However I do treasure the many

cookbooks given to me over the years. My husband, whether he's given them to me or not, has inscribed most of them with humourous dedications.

great thread.....

treasures from my Aunt, who was one of the best cooks ever and she rarely used a recipe:

two large and beautiful, hammered aluminun trays
cut crystal tooth pick holder and a large one she used for celery and carrot sticks
old tin measuring spoons, still in use
a metal egg slicer, still in use
depression glass citrus juicer
wooden spoons, still in use
my grandfather's horn handled carving set.
I know there must be some more but these are the ones I use and love.

thanks for asking us Heather smileys/smile.gif

Grandma's electric waffle iron from probably the 40's...

No non-stick stuff here! Cloth cord, round plug, what looks like cast aluminum interior (but I'm not sure)...and it works so beautifully! Also Grandma's sponge-ware bowls (she always used those for whipped cream because they held a chill so well), and my Mom's small blue crockery fruit bowls which actually probably came from my grandma. Mom's big square shallow, heavy aluminum roaster with rack. I love all these things. There are probably more, but these are the ones I use the most. Every time with a memory.

Probably 20% of the things I have in my kitchen.....

Oh, my. I am waay too sentimental, I guess! I love an eclectic look in my house so I have all things I love (from people I loved) mixed in with things that strike my fancy today.

Isn't it heartwarming to pick up your mom or grandma's rolling pin to roll those biscuits or pie crust out? The memories that flood your heart and soul are precious.

Among my favorites:

Grandma and Mother's rolling pins, biscuit cutter, Daisy butter churn, Noritake Azalea china, Homer Laughlin china (Ferndale), crockery bowls, butcher knives, angel food cake pan, juice reamer, iced tea pitcher and cookbooks. I also have my great grandmother's hand written recipes as well as my grandma's and mom's.

THINGS won't bring them back, but oh, they sure keep them close to heart! I have listed all the things I have with whom they came from so that when I am gone, my girls will remember exactly whose they were. Kids don't pay attention to these things until they are in their 30's usually. I know I didn't.

Great thread! Thanks Heather

I was really upset because I didn't realize it until after a bit...

the people who bought our house, flipped it, so I have no idea who is in it now. But thanks for the thought!

Grandma's cast iron dutch oven and fry pan, bought in 20's past down to my mom and now to me and old

rolling pin with the green handles, finally last year it had seen it's last day in the kitchen, is now on display in my kitchen glass cabinet along with a few more of her wonderful cooking items.
