Nigella Lawson is coming

Marg, so well said.

Sarah learned at the hand of Julia and brought that same warmth, that humanity, the desire to teach, and create a lesson with every step that would elevate instead of denigrate.

I've watched Rachael Ray's new show the last two days ..........

It is a fun show, just like her. I'm a real foodie and I appreciate all efforts, every cooking teacher from the chef down to that annoying Sandra Lee. While I don't watch many of them, I do appreciate what they do best. Therefore I do not consider myself a food snob.

Rach is a little over the top, a little loud, and probably could use some polish, but then she would not be Rachael Ray. She made a statement long ago when they were grooming her, "I will do it my way". And she has. She does not claim to be a chef. Look at her audience. They look like the 30 something’s, busy, young mothers who still want a life outside the kitchen. Rachael certainly can teach them to have that. By the way, the recipes of hers I have tried are excellent. But then, I am pretty good at selecting recipes, I just go by my gut feelings, just like Rachael Ray.

Given the chance, I'd love to have her in my circle of friends.

I watched that show a couple of times...I was so appalled. Not only was she horrible, but....

she's leave something like $1.79 for "taxes and tip" for a $12+ dinner! There was a site, I forget where now, where people were really trashing Rachel and one person said she should stay home until she could afford to leave a decent tip! I totally agree.

This new travel show is her third and not the $40/day show. It showcases a city for an hour.

I guess the Portland show had some picks that were closed by the time the show aired. I have many of her recipes and even one of her cookbooks and enjoyed her earlier shows, but she gets on my nerves lately with just too much "gushiness" and the way she screws up her face for emphasis. It's just over the top for me, and do we really need 3 shows now for her? Same with Paula Deen. She has a new show too, and I really like her, but it's just a bit overkill---for me. And I suppose I could critique all the FTV "chefs", but that's not my intent. I still watch and could turn the channel, and sometimes I do.

Oh, I haven't seen that one. I watched one where she was in Seattle, but I think...

that was the $40 a day show. I admire her for what she's managed to do and the success she's had, and I'm all for good meals that don't take a lot of time, but I don't seem to learn much in the way of technique, etc. This seems true with a lot of the shows. I tend to check online at food tv and check out recipes, more than watching. Besides, with FK, I'm learning all sorts of wonderful things about food, techniques, recipes and great people!

Hi Richard. Could you recommend some of those CDs you like?

I agree with you about Food Network. I only watch Dave Lieberman and Alton. I really like Barefoot Contenssa but I can't stand how she is always entertaining 'friends'.

Why Soytn'ly

Most of these are on DVD, some are video (I don't know whether they're available on both). Here are some I have watched/am watching/am going to watch:

Julia Child "The French Chef" vol. 1 & 2
Julia & Jacques Cooking At Home
Jacques Pepin "Fast Food My Way"
Jacques Pepin "Thanksgiving Celebration"
Jacques Pepin "Christmas Celebration"
Simply Ming - The Complete Collection (Discs 1-3)
Lidia Bastianich "Favorite Recipes from Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen"
Hayashi Ken "Ken Sushi"
Vegetarian Cooking with Compassionate Cooks
Indian Gourmet Cooking Sampler
Valentina Synyehubova "Russian Gourmet Cuisine"
Marina Antony "Russian Cakes and Pastries"
The Great Chefs-Great Cities Cookbook DVD
Stuart Brown "A Basic Renaissance Feast"
Culinard Culinary Institute "Interactive Cooking School Cooking Basics"
Jancis Robinson's Wine Course
John Cleese - Wine for the Confused
Advanced All Grain Brewing

Between the library, NetFlix, eBay, and Amazon I found all of these. NetFlix is a GREAT source (not affiliated, just a customer). It makes getting hold of these DVDs EASY and CHEAP. $5.99/month entitles you to 2 titles delivered to your door, keep as long as you want (but you have to return each disk to get the next-so if you keep a disk for longer than 3 weeks, chances are you're only going to get 1 disk that month!).

She is another one I think has been "overexposed" on FN...

She now has a talk show on Food Network and her sons have their own show. I like Paula and have used several of her recipes (though, not the velveeta fudge - yuck!), but I think they have gone overboard with her and her family now.

The same with Rachel Ray. I like some of her recipes, but I don't like watching her all that much and it seems like she is always on whenever I have time to watch any TV. I too miss the days on FN when you could learn real cooking techniques without all the cutsie "info-tainment".

Thanks Richard, when I read your post yesterday you inspired me to>>>

search out what was available on line. Mostly Julia I see and although I know who Julia was I have never watched one of her shows. After reading the passionate love and admiration for her by many on this site I realize that it's time to get one of her Cd's. When I lived overseas, I saw on Satellite a few newer chefs that really inspired me...like Caprial Pence. She really inspired me to start cooking! And some wonderful shows from the California Culinary Academy. I wish some of those were available. Anyway, thanks for the recommend.

Some of Julia's early shows on PBS are really funny too. It's a hoot when she makes a mistake.

Is Jancis Robinson the chef who has the cooking show from the castle in Scotland? Love that show.

I don't watch food network, but I do check their site for recipes and read the reviews.

Rachel Ray is too perky for me. They should have had her replace Catie Couric on the Today show!

Orchid, you really do need to watch Julia's shows.

they are amazing. And yes, we laugh at the mistakes, but she was doing these programs in one take!!! Before anyone had ever done a cooking show on tape.

But when something went wrong, she patiently explained what happened and patiently told you how to fix it. Those incidents are the most valuable in the series I think.

If not for her, we would be 20 years behind (at least!) where we are now.

Thanks!!! And that's for mentioning that Netflex had some of these....

I'm a member but would have never thought to see if they had any cooking DVDs.
