Non-food related article....

I hear you, I am still upset I got H1N1 from someone who knew they were exposed/got it.

Now I have permanently damaged lungs thanks to someone who came to work sick. And I got so sick I lost my job. :p

Given an opening I almost rant at folks to get vaccinated.

As a child, I had measles, mumps, chicken pox....so did all my friends,. Our kids all had measles,

can't recall mumps or chicken pox. Actually, as young mothers, we would expose our children to them to get it over with. It did not seem like a big deal to us, just a childhood expectation.

I am not against vaccinations, just from a different generation. I will say, my husband and I have never had a flu shot, never had the flu and we have not been sick in years. We do use those anti bacterial wipes at the grocery stores for the carts and our hands and we make sure to wash our hands when we arrive home from anywhere. We stay away from sick people who have colds or the flu.

Our family doctor did talk us into getting the lifetime pneumonia shot a few years ago. He has never mentioned anything else.

Yikes Maria, that is awful...I did not know that one could loose their job from an illness

when I worked for the City, there would be folks who became really ill and the employees would donate sick days, vacation time. No one ever lost their job over an illness unless it debilitated them to the point they could not perform physically or mentally anymore. It sure is a different world.

OMG I got the H1N1 at the first BlogHer Food and gave it to a friend,

I didn't mean to, of course, I didn't know I was sick. it was in 2009 and we spent the day together and by the end of day I suddenly felt awful. She came down with it after 5 days or so, our symptoms were identical. She had health insurance (I was unemployed) so she got tested and was positive. Her doctor called me at home and was really nice, helped me stay quarantined. That was a horrible bug and I was glad I was unemployed because I needed to stay quarantined due to the fever for about 2 1/2 weeks and in bed for about a month, Sharon too and lots of similar reports from the bloggers from the conference. But it was nothing at all like the pertussis, I can see why babies and elderly die from it. Makes the H1N1 seem like a gecko with pertussis as Godzilla...

It was because I was sick for so long...

Over a year and I'm still dealing with the fallout (which is why I'm still not back to work). They held a job for me for a year, but at the one year mark I still wasn't well enough to go back to work.

The real flu, once you've had it is like a shocking wake-up call. At least it was for me. I could not believe how sick I was and how fast it came on. At 4pm I was at a birthday party, at 4:15 told my friend we should go and maybe pick up some Tylenol on the way home as I felt a tiny bit off. At 5pm I was too sick to stand and had a fever so high I was delirious. I couldn't stop my teeth from chattering or my body from shaking. The walls were moving and there were giant yellow spiders crawling up them. Then H1N1 turned into severe pneumonia, and my lung collapsed, and on and on...

Fun times.

Now I NEVER miss a vaccine. My dr insists as I'm so compromised now.

What I realized is vaccines aren't just for yourself, they are as much for others/compromised people to ensure they don't get sick. After all I've been through I don't think I could live with myself if I passed on something that horrible to anyone else. It completely changed my life.

Just got the TDAP last Wednesday....

... because I AM A GRANDMA!!!!! Well, bonus-Grandma, as my stepson had a baby girl on March 28th

and will travel to meet the baby girl at the end of April - so both Phil and I got the vaccine

interestingly enough, Phil had almost no reaction to it, whereas my arm had a HUGE swollen, red area and only today (5 days later) I can touch the area without too much pain.

in theory, I am immunized for 10 more years...

Oh Maria

it collapsed your lung?! That's just so awful, I hope you continue to recover. The body has an amazing capacity to heal and I hope you are feeling better...

Heather...

Doing somewhat better now, but yeah. Breathing isn't quite the same as it use to be.

Thank goodness for cake! smileys/smile.gif
