O.K. Started this and it went away? Too Long? First, thanks to all who answered my....

potato query, great link and ideas. However, alas, I have no taters.

Very early 0030(last Friday 12-1, woke up to no engine sounds,no lights, and rough seas. Went below as generator was restored, for the next several hours, engineers fought contaminated fuel (water) and could not get mains going, had power off and on, but without, was taking on water--all in all about five or more things going wrong at once. About 1100 looked like we would be abandoning, lowered rafts and other preparations. Had time, no panic. But on the way down to disembark, ship was pitching pretty wildly, I was hanging onto the rail so as not to get slammed on steel deck below and got sort of dropped down to step below on one leg, broke leg.

2nd Mate was slammed by wave back into vessel and broke hip.

But thank God, all thirty into rafts, to be picked up by two shrimp boats who took us to Tuxpan, about 4 hours.

John (mate) and I went to hospital, rest went to hotel and bar.

I will be fine, go down to Seattle Tuesday night for surgery Wednesday and home Friday. Three months (Damn!), PT starts in three weeks.

Mexican hospital was clean and they were so caring! But so sad, the really old, old equipment. Couldn't believe the difference in quality of X-ray. Mexican doctor could see no need for surgery. Was very obvious in Seattle.

So, flash drive with recipes and CD back ups are on board, so I will be doing a lot of searchs!

And probably asking for some help, my best stuff is from Gail's and here!

Thanks to you all for being here. I was telling my excellent 2nd cook about FK and we had planned on making mole. He loved rvb's post so much, he may be here as we speak.

Later,

Nan

Oh dear, Nan, so sorry to hear about the leg.

Hope you heal quickly. In the meantime, it will be nice to see more of you here for a while.)

Sorry to hear about how things turned out. I'm glad you are okay and sympathize about the leg!

I hope you don't have too much trouble getting around. I wish I'd known you were in Seattle, but you probably weren't in the mood to socialize.

Thanks ladies, actually have got the crutches down pretty well. Hardest thing is...

finding a place to sit with straight leg, brace after surgery will have a hinge. should be easier. Insurance lady says this surgeon is one of the best in the Northwest--good to hear.
I usually heal pretty fast and plan on being dilligent with the PT. I understand we have some good people here in Ketchikan. Have job in March.
Lin, I was crazy busy in Seattle this week, doctors,Coast Guard, our office, insurance, etc.
Surgery is noon Wednesday, it is out patient and I will be delivered to the Silver Cloud Hotel right near Swedish. Will probably be trying to figure out pain meds etc. that day, but should be up for a little fun Thursday or Friday, late flight home Friday. Will PM my cell and e-mail

She's sitting in 45 meters of water, plans are to raise her and then??

she is 60 meters long, as we pulled away in the shrimp boat, her portside rail was all the way over to the water, understand a couple of hours later her bow was up before she went down.

Nan, So sorry to hear your situation. Hope all goes well for you and a speedy recovery!

p.s. If I can help you search to recover your lost recipes, please

don't hesitate to ask. In fact, since the PM isn't working for everyone right now, feel free to send me an email with a list and I'll get on it this weekend. I love searching for stuff, even in the old archives. ;o)

Thanks, may need that! Got a lot done last night and can actually remember...

quite a few and trying to type those up.
Had all software with me (in case computer crashed?) so had to order software for printer, it wouldn't download, too big for my dail-up.
Thanks goodness many are here, but will have to scan some from books to new flash drive.
We were able to go back in and pick up some stuff, but that flash drive was in the galley and didn't want to venture down to that deck.
Also lost a big, beautiful stash of Penzey's; hey, it's only stuff! Saying that a lot now.
Thanks Again,
Nan

Just saved most of post 4781, great thread!

OMG Nan! I actually visualized your experience - how scary! I'm so glad

you were able to be rescued. Relax, get well, and enjoy recouping those lost at sea recipes!

NAN!!!! Just popped in to lurk quickly and saw this!!! OMG I am sooo ....

not happy to hear what happened but you are so strong.
What an experience. I lived worrying everyday about what would happen if my special collection of cook books, family pics, momentos etc went to Davey Jones but girl, you and the crew are safe.
BIG hugs going to you from this end of the pond.
What are you going to do next...will you join another boat...will you go back on board once the boat has been salvaged and sea worthy again...
WOW
Well all the best wishes to you and yours for Christmas and best wishes for a wonderful New Year
Joanie
