Ok folks...what's your Saturday Six?

Today I'm hanging around the house mostly,

Doing a bit of gardening (it's been hot so need to do some deep watering and find out what I can put on the petunias that's eating them).

Got the live National Book Festival on tv in the background.

Can't decide if I should hit the Farmer's Market today or tomorrow...looking more like tomorrow and it's the better one anyhoo.

Started prepping the house for Fall and the soon to be dug out Halloween decorations.

Laundry (boo)

And I'm making a peach pie! Grabbed some of the last of the season and really wanted one more before we go full on Fall.

I was thinking about starting this thread earlier but

considering I have a stomach virus and feel like ... and not sure what I feel like doing.

It was supposed to rain - so I canned chilli sauce.... but it didn't rain....

figures. I could have worked outside and canned tomorrow. Oh well.

Made chilli sauce - never made this before so I used a friend's next door neighbor's recipe from way back.. you know the kind - that vague recipe with vague instructions smileys/smile.gif But it came out pretty tastey. Not sure what the original tasted like - I'm going to give some to my friend for a taste test - to see if I measure up!

I've been trying to use all the veggies that I get weekly from the farm (I have a subscription). Last year was my first year canninng - now I'm a canning fiend. Well not actually a fiend - but so far I've canned peach jam, salsa verde, tomato sauce, hot salsa, milder salsa, strawberry jam, and now the chilli sauce.

Tomorrow I'm making (I hope) Sandra's Pork Chile Verde -- I still have a quart of tomatillos left to use and since it got raves here I'm going to try it.

Sat Six... What a fun tradition... Let's see

"planning" / recipe shopping for a rib recipe to be made with Spanish rice for tomorrow. (They were on sale, so picked them up, and rec'd a request for spanish rice....)

Making chicken breasts and some sort of hash brown casserole w/ cheese for dinner tonight. I purchased the low salt ritz a few weeks ago, and they just are not working; (no flavor for us). So instead of throwing them out, I ended up spending $5.00 on frozen hashbrowns and soup, etc.. Silly Barb

FIL LOVED my pepper dip that dh brought to a party. I was not able to attend, so he brought up a platter w/ fancy dip dishes, sliced vegies, pita chips, etc. Hated to tell him that they were not from his hungarian peppers, but from TJs. (And included eggplant!)

Camera seems to be a lil off. I wanted to take a picture of my tomato crop from this year to share with Pat. If I can figure it out this weekend, I will ask for help on how to post it. By my lack of contributions to recipes, you can guess it was small.

Purchased ALREADY, far too much halloween candy. Dh had a very bad, memorable and obviously tramatic experience when he was a kid. His parents ran out of candy. I swear we buy enough for 3 years. BUT, all the kids in the neighborhood know they can count on lots. ((Poor dh!.....He must have been mortified or teased)

Need to buy a new Mop and kitchen broom, they were overused / ruined w/ the hurricane. Thinking a trip to Target tomorrow.

Enjoy the weekend!~

Best,
Barb

For petunias--it's usually caterpillars. Look for an organic spray with active ingredient B.t.

(short for Bacillus thurengensis, a bacteria that only hurts caterpillars.) It works wonders on tomato worms too.

The caterpillars on petunias are small and eat the flowers--they sometimes turn color to match the flower they're eating.

Speaking of mops, does anyone have a floor steamer cleaner that they like?

I need one for the store, as the mops just seem to streak the dirt around. Thanks!

Barb, I have chicken breasts for dinner tonight and haven't a clue as to what to make with them. Let us know how your casserole turns out.
Would you share the dip recipe?

Ha...it'll be ok, we'l talk you down, lol. Went to OSHardware and no BT...

I'll hit the nursery tomorrow to try and find the organic version with BT.

So, what a difference a day makes. Yesterday it was Summer and today it's Fall. Yesterday was in the 90's and I just got back from the store...it's 69 with a chilly where's my sweater breeze coming in off the bay and leaves are rolling down the street.

Pie will happen tomorrow as I was out of unsalted butter (hence the trip to the store). Can you believe I made it out of TJ's with just butter and OJ? Me neither.

I am working to perfect my role as cranky old lady; I spoke to the mgr at Walgreen's about people parking in the handicap spot because it needs repainting. Then, I went next door to the new Fresh & Easy to inform them I would boycott them as long as they continue to have discriminatory parking spaces. Later, I'll work on my 50' neon get off my lawn sign. smileys/wink.gif

Yay, the Saturday Six is back! Thanks, Maria! smileys/smile.gif

1. Made Dawn's Creamy Chicken Enchiladas for the first homemade dinner in our new apartment. If I weren't already married, I'd marry that recipe.

2. Am a little over-excited about having enough counterspace for cookbooks again...and about having a dishwasher.

3. Discovered a great Middle-Eastern deli around the corner from us, called "Kashkaval." smileys/smile.gif

4. Despite #1, I haven't done any serious cooking in a long time; the two weeks prior to the move, we packed up almost everything, gradually, and now it's taken a week to give everything a new proper place...plus another few days to figure out where to shop.

5. Traca's linked scone recipe above makes a great master scone recipe; I'd planned to make it with the ginger, but it vanished, so we now have great cranberry-lemon scones.

6. Found a wonderful (albeit tiny) greenmarket that's open around the corner from us on Wednesdays and Sundays--lovely breads and pies stand, plus a bunch of produce.

However, I sort of miss our old neighborhood, with its great Italian-sandwich place and the good coffeeshop... You'd think I'd have learned how to adapt more quickly with each move (even if it's just across town), but somehow it always takes longer.

Happy weekend to all--
ErininNY

It's still technically Saturday here, so...

I had the most amazing coffee today from La Paz, the beans were just reposing in my pantry and I could kick myself for not trying them earlier.

I made my own version on boxed mac'n cheese with all goat: soft goat cheese, goat milk (it's good, really!!) and an aged goat cheese made for grating.

Sadly I've been having major food allergy attacks and was at the ER one night this week so I just don't know what's safe to eat anymore, besides the pasta. Eggs, tomatoes, pork, all berries, pineapple, all citrus are suspect. The docs gave me all kinds of drugs to take including steroids so I'm feeling better but oddly jittery despite handfuls of benadryl. I was so glad my pasta didn't make me sick but it's not good to eat carbs right now because of the prednisone. I'm feeling quite stressed about food and wish I could turn off the need to eat.

One positive side effect is that my shoulder hurts less from the steroids so I took advantage and vacuumed and I was able to do over housework that I just couldn't do before. And I started a new hat for winter. It was so relaxing to knit and drink coffee and watch the fog blow by, I'm going to repeat this tomorrow.

I'm hoping next week will be easier, I'm looking forward to seeing an immunologist on Monday, never thought I'd wish a weekend to whizz by.

Congrats on the move Erin. I am excited for you. I hope you did move during all that rain!

I think I know where you are in NY. I spent quite a bit of time in that area in June, even walked by Kashkaval a few times. You are in a fun area! I wish I could remember the name of the fun, outdoor restaurant dh and I enjoyed. We actually went a few times. I will see if dh remembers.

Oh Heather, what a shame re: food allergies. Is there a way to isolate what you are

allergic to via shots? OR is it a trial and error thing? Must be scary if you do not know what triggers it, also if it just started as an adult.

Hope you are able to learn what causes the symptoms!

best,

Barb

Think I am turning the corner with this stomach bug so I'll have my Sunday 6

and a few more to make up for yesterday

1) Got a bunch of fresh local eggplant and a coworker begging for my 'famous' eggplant parm so I'll prep everything today so I can fry it tomorrow morning and let it bake while I get dressed.
2) Also have a bunch of squashes so I think some butternut risotto with some browned butter and fried sage will go nicely with the eggplant parm.
3) Dear hubby wants venison burgers for supper
4) Going to fix up a bunch of the last vegetables - butter beans, October beans, purple hull peas, corn, potatoes, okra - to go with meals the rest of the week
5) GOT to try the beer bacon almonds
6) Got to try the lemon ricotta cake and maybe even a cobbler or something
7) Cooking off some chicken breasts for chicken salad for lunches
smileys/bigeyes.gif Got some leftover roasted chicken in the freezer - making some enchiladas and buffalo chicken dip for lunches and quick suppers.
9) Looking forward to the Southern Artisan Cheese Festival Friday night!!!

It's scary

They're going to run allergy tests, hope they can figure it out. The anaphylaxis part is scary. On the plus side I have lips most Hollywood stars pay big bucks for. Haha. smileys/frown.gif
