while we are having dinner, playing cards, etc.

it absolutely annoys the hell out of me. we were playing cards and my stepdaughter and son in law were texting on and off the whole time. i text, i am not a dinosaur, but shouldnt there be some manners?

Manners??! ....right out the window... along with having 'private' phone conversations...

I can learn all about 'John' and his annoying venereal disease, his choice of ointment, and his breakup with the girlfriend, all in a span of 5 min. People don't care anymore who hears them... and men who don't even know they're supposed to take their hats off (at the table, in a restaurant, in church...)

Rudeness has been reclassified as a way of life and it STINKS (((she says while shaking her fist)))

It's like reading the paper at the table. Luckily, I don't have that

problem (yet and hopefully never), but what gets me is people standing in the middle of the store, talking on the cell phone. They're usually RIGHT in front of what you're trying to look at and they are saying things (loudly) about absolutely nothing that has to do with anything relative to shopping.

But I digress... I'm now going to say UMMmmmm five times and be more patient in the New Year.

Happy New Year, y'all!

My first personal experience with it was Monday night...

Went dress shopping for a friend's wedding then walked over to a nearby restaurant for dinner. The 12 year old niece of the bride texted friends the entire time w/ her new phone.

I said to her mom "Is this my future?" and she said "yup".

Over my dead body will my kids be doing that at a dinner table - home or otherwise.

Oh, the humanity!

GRRRRRRRRRRRR! I had to bite the bullet and learn to text

I learned to text, I found working with media people that short texts work get a better response than a phone call. At first I spelled the words fully and correctly, but learned to accept the 2=to, too, and two! It drives me nuts.
If had a school age child, I would not even let them have a cell phone unless they made a B in English (in America, or French in France, etc). I am a staff writer now, and I iterate...IT DRIVES ME NUTS!!!

Setting limits only works when you are willing to follow through, and...

...have the support of your spouse.

Other people's kids are off limits.

Darn.

When we got to the point where cell phones became a useful convenience for our teens...

...we set limits and made expectations clear -before we went to buy them.

We only had to apply 'consequences' once, and when we did, our son understood why, and also understood that privileges can disappear permanently if abused.

Owning a cell phone is not a license to throw all good sense and courtesy out the window. Some things don't change. We've told our kids since they were little that "Love is not rude".

Works for us,

Michael

Read Stephen King's book "Cell"... you'll chuckle and applaud if you hate cell phones smileys/smile.gif

I sat next to a woman and her daughter in a restaurant -- the daughter was about 13...

The ENTIRE dinner, they both talked on their respective cell phones. No wonder no one can communicate face-to-face anymore... how sad!

Physicians are now seeing more ear and thumb problems... shouldn't this tell people something?

Manners??????

My boyfriends nephew sat at dinner with us in a lovely Italian Restaurant texting the entire time. What amazed me is he didn't miss a beat in our conversation as his thumbs stayed constantly busy!

At first, schools "banned" pagers and cells because of drug trafficking

but then, they caught on as a way to keep everyone in touch in our busy, multi-layered world. Now, I've got 8 yr. olds coming to school with cells, and using them. Good luck Mr./Ms. Teacher...you gave little Janie detention, and while you're trying to call her parents to explain, she's already "text-messaged" them to call the Principal, she's being picked on... And then there's the sweet little Yard Duty Grandma out there, letting kids call from her cell for God only knows what reason THIS time... By the time we find out little Danny was in trouble, he's already called from the play yard to go home "sick." Oh yeah! Let's HEAR it for PROGRESS!!

Our school has detention for any student caught using a cell phone during...

...school hours. If they are on campus after hours, they may only be calling their parents. Otherwise, detention. And the second time is suspension.
