Our "Marines in Iraq" coordinator at work just sent me this photo....

These are the reverse-engineered oatmeal cookies I posted last week. The first batch of goodie boxes were prepared for 27 Marines. Amazingly, it only took 6 days for the boxes to leave Orlando and arrive in Iraq.

This particular group of soldiers has worked with our facility for years during Christmas doing "Bikes for Tykes"---raising money to buy full-size bicycles for needy kids. It's a thrill every year--and one that still makes me cry--to walk into the cafeteria one morning after weeks of fund-raising and see 350 bicycles fully assembled and lined up around the walls, with boxes of helmets along side.

This group of Marines was sent over to Iraq a few months ago and we wanted to say "THANK YOU!"

I'll be baking the next batch of cookies for 43 more boxes in a few weeks.

Marilyn, what a gift of love and support. What a beautiful young man with his look of thanks ;o)

Is it possible for you to give the mailing address to these fine young soldiers? I would be more then happy to send them off a package. Marylin, you're awesome!! Thanks for sharing, Diane

I'm proud of you Marilyn! What a great way to lift a soldier's spirits! By the

way, that box is the same kind I used to ship cookies to my Dad in Florida last year. He said that the cookies arrived in tact (of course due to my excellent packing skills - lol).

Sandy, please share what type of cookies you've found hold up best in shipping. And

do tell your special packing techniques, pretty please. ;o)

Diane, Pat-NoCal just asked the same thing...

So I walked over and spoke with the coordinator. She does not have permission to give out their names/addresses (I didn't even see their names...I just prepared the cookie packages and brought them into work...someone else packed up the boxes and mailed them out).

I do know that you cannot mail a box without a specific soldier's name attached...they no longer accept generic mailings.

Debra said that she'll speak with their Events Coordinator and see if there is a solution.

The boxes were mailed flat-rate for $8.10. Pretty astounding to go half-way around the world in less than a week.

If you promise not to laugh Pat…

I used a 13” x 8.5” x 2.5”??? (containers were sacrificed so this is approximate) Tupperware-type container. I searched unsuccessfully at the dollar stores for them. The cookies were B.A.’s Maple Stars that were frozen before taking to the post office for next day delivery. I layered the cookies in three tiers folding over with brown parchment paper and a little more crumpled on top.

I stabilized the container in one of those U.S. Post Office Express Mail boxes by putting Tastykake’s Tandycakes packages on either side and regular and white Kit Kats were underneath to prevent the container from moving. Unorthodox perhaps, but effective.

Other than the same type of gift that went to my nieces in Scotland, these were the only cookies I ever mailed. By no means am I a pro or a baker! Since Marilyn seemed to have shipped mass quantities, she might be the better authority…
