If you already have a yarn you can look it up and see what other people made with it and their comments. And pictures!

My favorite sock book is Cat Bordi's Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles. To make the foot fit better just reduce the number of stitches more when you are doing the heel gussett. So if the pattern says 66 stitches for the foot, go down to 60 or 58 or something. With Cat's method you can try it on as you go so they always fit.
