Rec: Bloody berry fruit salad, a potluck request

My neighbor invited me to Halloween party this Friday that she is cohosting at her friends home. I’ve never been there nor met them, but welcomed being invited. It’s hamburgers, hotdogs, and the rest potluck. Lots of kids. 60 people. The sign up included the recipe. I was asked to sign up for this. Ok, sure. I’m sure it will be fine, because, hey it’s fruit, how can you screw that up? However, it only has one review and they changed the recipe. So will let you know how it turns out. I’ve never had lychees in syrup, and Safeway lied about carrying it. No other store had it either. So I looked online and they were $15 per can! After some hunting I found an Asian market 30 mins away, that had them for $4 per can. So with that car trip and the time it took to track them down, now I’m invested in the outcome. Anyone ever had lychees in syrup? Thoughts?

Oui, madame. They are very sweet in syrup. Too sweet for me, and I like lychees, but fresh. Very ghoulish for Hallowe'en. Creative people.

They use only 2 T of the syrup so it shouldn't be too much, I would think.

I've only had fresh lychees...would drain and blot them to remove as much syrup as possible. They are sweet on their own. I wonder if the syrup is to preserve and keep the shape because they don't need sugar.

Eyeballs?

Also, I would TASTE the blackberries and raspberries first before adding. Based on the fair cake I made with fresh raspberries, almost 100% of the 10 packages I bought were bitter (both raspberries and then a blackberry for me to try). Hold onto the lychee syrup and toss the berries in that if needs be.

One word: yuck

and you were right the berries were so bitter I would’ve called it inedible. I tossed a bunch of sugar on it and brought it. After all this recipe wasn’t my idea. 🤷🏻‍♀️
