Same old, same old. My dog Abby is doing the not eating thing again.

We aren't as freaked out as we were the last time she did this; no xrays or such. Last time there was nothing conclusive in her xrays or blood tests, so this time we are doing it ourselves. It is the same thing all over. I am giving her liquids and pureed canned dog food. Her spirits are up mostly unless she knows I am going to give her pureed food, then she hides.

Has anyone else with dogs ever gone through this? Any insight? She came through it last time and I am confident she will this time, but it is making me a bit crazy. This extra-large dog running and hiding behind my hub's lazyboy when I say "TREAT".

Will Abby starve herself if you don't force meals? I think I remember that happening...

...last time.

My instinct would be to feed her if she wants food, but otherwise just keep fresh water available and let it run its course.

exactly...

when the pups have digestive problems, they take care of themselves.

Like chidren, they will eat when they need to.

Children will not starve themselves, neither will puppies.

You know I'm sort of an old dog. was out of town for a conference last week. Friday night had a

couple of glasses of wine with friends. went down the street for dinner, looked at the menu, nothing looked good, went to room. later looked at delivery menu, same thing. Saturday morning got a bagel, ate part of half. felt good, took a long wonderful walk. had plans for banquet that night, thought I should eat something, got some take away.
back in room ate a few bites, laid down and then become violently ill.
Was really sick for about three hours. because I had not eaten much was not like it could have been.
then was feverish, chilled, hurty until yesterday afternoon.

Now I am a girl who doesn't miss meals, but that made me think of the things I had heard about kids and animals.
Hmmmmmmm?
Better now,
Nan

Maybe you need to gnaw on some grass like doggies do when their

tum tum is not quite right. Just yolking, wanted to give you a little smile... My doc told me that our bodies are smarter than our minds. Glad you are feeling better!

And Dawn, I hope Abby is back to her usual self soon! It's scary when out pet-children aren't well. Pogo has a weird cough so I'm saving for a vet visit.

She was close last time. As a last resort, we started force feeding her.

I have no idea what is going on with her. She will not eat or drink water willingly. I am forcing water and thinned food down her throat. And when she hears me calling her or sees the dropper, she runs away from me. She is relatively energetic, but she just will not eat or drink. I am also feeing her water.
Honestly, I have no clue what is going on with her. She will not eat on her own. I have tried to tempt her with all kinds of goodies, and she just runs and hides behind hubs lazyboy. she isn't dehydrated, but good grief. I just want her to feel good again. I hate this.

Gosh Dawn, didn't mean to make light of your post! Come on Abby, we want you back to perky, come on.

Dawn, I unfortunately went through this with Libby, she refursed her food and became extremely picky

This lasted for over a year, and she would go so long to almost starve herself. Along the way, out of shear desperation to have her eat we discovered her beloved french fries.

We changed her diet, food, expensive, comparative, and we also learned it takes a dog about a month to adapt to a "new" food. So we were taught to introduce each new food gradually.

This was driving us out of our minds.

It is not normal for a dog to reject their food, they can be picky but eventually they will eat and never ever starve themselves no matter what.

Maybe you might want to have Abby's protein levels checked.

I pray, very sincerely, that Abby is healthy and just being finicky, but ease your minds and have her checked. (sorry this is not happiness information)

Sadly, we got our answer, Libby was loosing protein, she was diagnosed with cancer. We lost her this past December.

((Oh Dawn!)) Is she drinking water? Is she urinating? Does her tummy hurt when touched? I only

ask, because these were questions just asked re: Daisy.
Those lil guys, (or in your case...a big guy), can really cause such concern!

It is just the oddest thing.

The last time she did this, we never did find out what was wrong. We had her x-rayed and there wasn't any obstruction. I can palpitate her stomach and she doesn't appear to be in any pain. I don't know if she is drinking water, I haven't seen her drink any, but she is not dehydrated so she is either drinking water or the fluids I am giving her are keeping her hydrated. It's been about 6 days now, so hopefully this will pass soon. Thanks for all your advice and kind words. Kids and pups, they sure can worry you!

Check her teeth (our dog had a cracked and painful canine). . .

Our dog refused food, when you served it to her she would look at you like "Are you joking?" The tooth that was eventually pulled was very sensitive. She did not want anything touching it, and I can see why.

Check the food--sometimes the dogs just get tired of it plus if you have read about what dog food may be made out of (depending on the brand), it may indeed contain some "funky" ingredient that you dog does not like.

More important: was she checked for pancreatitis? Dogs will go off their feed with this and should not eat--'cus it could kill them. . .

What a good suggestion! I never would have thought of her teeth that could be missed in an

examination, couldn't it. Sorry about the poor punctuation in the heading. Should have read "...teeth. That could have been...." DUH

I really think it is intestinal. But I will take a look at her teeth, and someone

suggested that I go online and look at her breed, which is half Great Pyrenees, so hopefully that will give me some insight. Plus she drank some chicken broth, which is huge. So I am feeling more optimistic tonight.

She is beautiful, wish her a nice restful, healing sleep tonight and some appetite in the morning.

Teeth problems can cause major organ difficulties which can be evidenced by blood tests.

How is she today?
