((I can'tbelieve it is Saturday already!! ))

- I have been 'jammin! Have one more "batch" of raspberry/blackberry jam left to complete. Put them through the food mill yesterday (we don't really like seeds) I will be finishing it today... I am thinking of adding hot peppers to this one.

- I picked my first cucumber from our WEED ..uuhhmm I mean veggie garden. Lots of green tomatoes and Hungarian beans. Hungarian peppers are not doing well at all.

- Gooseberries...My project for next week. Thinking of "jam and the chutney recipe that I posted earlier in the week....

- Love the local concerts/plays during the summer. So much to do. Unfortunately, last night the local park had a play that was 1/2 way through only to be rained out with severe thunder and lightning.

- Went to the Central Park Zoo earlier in the week. LOVED the penguin exhibit. I spent some time talking with a nice woman that volunteers there. She said that the volunteers are put through 2 months of extensive training. (Impressive!)

- Can't think of a six one... Oh, I have one...dh wants to start South Beach on Monday.

Enjoy the weekend!

Squash blossoms + 5 To-Dos for Saturday

1) Very shortly, I'm going out to harvest my male zucchini flowers. I'm trying to decide how to save the pollen in case I need it to hand pollinate when the "girls" come - I've never that done before.
2) First major yardwork since I broke my wrist 8 weeks ago - surgery with 6 pins! This morning, I need to clear weeds and build up a raised bed to move my container zucchini and 3 potted tomato plants for more sun exposure.
3) Walk 3 miles round trip to downtown with Hubby for chicken Greek salad (hopefully along the river - it's cold here so maybe the mosquitoes won't be out.)
4) Off to the grocery after lunch for ricotta to stuff my blossoms. Too many grocery trips this past week!
5) IFFY - Make a plum tart (I think my plums may have been frozen.)
Now that I have my occupational therapy scheduled for my wrist, I need to call on Monday for service on my old Sub Zero. Two years ago service recharged the freon and suggested a very expensive part replacement. The fridge worked fine without the new part until now so I'm hoping another freon recharge will do the trick. I'm not sure it's worth it to replace the part but if I can get 2 more years of life with a charge, I may be willing to buy a new fridge, then.
6) Mix up blossom ricotta filling, stuff, dip and fry squash blossoms for dinner. I'm planning to open several cans of vegetarian stuffed grape leaves I taste-tested on Thursday at Costco, loved and then bought! I'd like to make a light tomato sauce for the grape leaves - need to search the Swap and see what's suggested. (The frozen Angus burgers Costco has in the new coupon book are quick and yummy!)

My Saturday Six

1. Can I slip a Friday meal into the list? Made Chicken with Feta and Evelyn's Greek Potatoes for dinner last night. I've been working to finish a big project and haven't been cooking much lately--was so nice to work with food again. DH wasn't crazy about it at first bite, halfway through he said, "This is pretty good," then he went back for seconds. smileys/smile.gif

2. Pulled out some steaks to defrost for grilling tonight. Will bake some potatoes and do something with carrots. (I think Meryl posted a carrot recipe with honey that I will try.)

3. Lunches this week have been vegetable sandwiches: french bread spread with soft goat's cheese, avocado, sweet onions, tomatoes, lettuce. Eaten on the deck in the sunshine. Yum.

4. Made a big vat of Tazo passion fruit iced tea. I've already finished it. Must make more.

5. Made Meryl's Jam-Filled Muffins for breakfast. So fast and easy and a good way to use up half jars of jams, jellies, preserves. I love baking...

6. I honestly can't think of a sixth item...

My Saturday Six

Since we've been out of town for a week - definitely time to stock back up.
- Farmer's Market at the Factory in Franklin for my regulars - want some beets to can, I'm on a pickled beet kick (ate one whole qt jar in a day)
- Calling Uncle Sonny - need some of those Mississippi blueberries so I can try that Blazing Blue Jelly plus I need him to make a trip to Sciple's mill and get me some more grits for sure (this mill is a GEM, it's like a museum, a must visit if you are ever travelling through Mississippi - been in constant operation since 1790 even after being hit by a tornado - so I am old it is the one that has been in constant operation the longest)
- Need to smoke some pork butts - completely out
- Must go to Trader Joe's - got to try that sour cherry juice but I need some of their salsas and such
- plan out my preserving - trying to figure how much of what to put up - this is going to be my first year to really can, last year was just small trial run - OH - must order large canner from Sears! Looking at the book I got on building a smoke house for later in the fall but think I am going to make some oven dried beef jerky this week
- International markets - need Bulgogi marinade (there is an AWESOME one with Asian pear and apple juices in it)

Saturday Six -

1. Feeling very down...(what a way to start) BUT have to keep on with this damn diet. Staying at home all the time is not for me especially as we have power cuts for up to 5 hours a day...(long story of inept management here on island)

2. Been dreadfully lonely these past 2 weeks, everyone away and no phone calls, which is just as well as I am 'shaking' to loose weight...kick start. BUT thank goodness for this forum and Face Book...playing farming games mostly as it is too hot here to do much real farming.

3. I have lost almost 16LBS but can I see my way for a whole month???? Gulp!! I want to read these wonderful cook books and mags I brought back with me from the last trip abroad!!

4. I love the choclate mint shake and the strawberry but I want to cook something, anything...but I taste cook so I MUST NOT!

5. DH has lost more weight than I have but he is not on this damn diet, just... I am not cooking for him. Phewwwee.

6. To cheer me up we are off to see The Proposal tonight......I WILL NOT have the Heineken Beer and nachos my DH loves when we go to the movies....I have 40LBS I still want to loose.

My Whiney Saturday Six

Amanda, your chicken with feta sounds good - I had a Greek omelet with feta, tomato slices, and lots of spinach the other day (out). I'll have to make that sometime for us. Good!

Here are my six:

1) Not going to the un-party that was cancelled due to an in-law who just had to do their own thing so the cookout (for the out-of-state relatives for which this was going to be the only time we'd see them) was cancelled (don't even start me on that!!). Don't you just love family sometimes?!

2) Made corn-zuchinni pancakes for breakfast this a.m. Good, but this time I added flour and another egg to the batter because it just "didn't look right". Turned out more like regular pancakes, but good.

3) Cleaning out the car? Cleaning out the refrigerator? Don't feel like cooking any more this weekend.

4) My poor herb garden. My poor flowers. Between the lack of heat and my black thumb it doesn't look too good back there.

5) Figuring out what else to do because I was baking and shopping for, and looking forward to, this un-event all week. It's a sunny day and here I sit all dressed up and nowhere to go. Yardwork?

6) At least I have my TJ's cherry juice ;o)

Congrats on the weight loss Joanie! It's hard. Sounds like it's a rough

weekend for just more than me. The planets must be lined up all wonky. Chin up!

Keep it up Joanie and congrats on 16 so far.

I lost my 95 in almost 9 mo and getting the first 20 off was the hardest. But I did it. You will too. You can get 40 more off. It will change your life.

Oct 1 will be three years thin for me. I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels. I am sending energy your way to help you get through the "hateful" diet days and get into the "wow, I can't believe how much I've lost" days. Try to stay away from the magazines until you feel secure in your diet strategy. I even stayed away from the forum for a long time until i trusted my discipline and changed my eating habits for good. Now I can read anything. Hopefully it will happen for you too!!

Congrats - share what ou are doing - I've got to loose some weight too

maybe we can help support each other here - or look me up on FB - Melissa Clinton Linkinhoker.

MCM...

I swallowed hard (as I am rather in debt from all the travelling I have had to do this past year) bit the bullet, hid my head in the sand...and am doing the Cambridge Diet...for good or bad it is about $100.00 a week.....OK if there is nothing else needed to buy for the pantry...but hard when there is a little....really just enough produce from the garden to not warrent any spending at the supermarket....anyway...after this I will go on to doing the Aitkens again.....this is easier and less expensive. I lost a lot some years back but gained it all due to some years of not...not what, who knows but seriously not....then 2 years ago I got better and am playing squash again etc...this means moving about which is a big secrect in keeping the weight off......so now I HAVE to carry on with this damn diet......I will get there...just such a bore at the moment....

My Saturday Six

Fixed the bird feeder with the squirrel protector for the fifth time! Dang squirrel just stands on the bar that is supposed to throw him off and holds on while he stretches to the feed bin. Cheeky little guy. We have beautiful buntings that are so colorful -- the squirrel makes me so mad!!!

Raced to the post office that closes waaay too early on Saturday! Made it in time to mail package.

Drove out to San Marcos outlets in search of an end table with a drawer where I can stash my reading glasses. No luck. Lots of stuff to look at though!

Talked to my great uncle Roy who has yards of genealogical information for me. I haven't seen him since I was really little. We have been looking for info on a gr gr gr grandparent, and hopefully he'll be the key!

Found a recipe to try -- Roast Chicken breasts with garbanzo beans, tomatoes and paprika. It looks so good, but it is too hot to fire up the oven. Guess I will grill those breasts outside (they are brining now) and have some corn on the cob and fresh tomatoes with mozzarella and basil.

joanie, you are an inspiration! I'll look up the Cambridge diet -- we keep coming back to South Beach, but are unsuccessful so far. I did so well on Adkins a few years back -- lost 45 pounds. It slowly came back and we are trying to find something we can stick to.

Just the bitter truth - the older ones vs the young ones is what it really amounts to

There were 7 of us for a long time and then when the youngest of us were in our teens, along came three more. Of those three, one is REALLY a pill and trouble, one so so, and one is normal. Well - the one that is trouble is the same age as the kids of one of the older ones of us. We just didn't share the same experience and closeness.
