Second 'Girls Group ' cooking class went really well!

This time we did 'Holiday Baking' - essentially one bowl recipes that can be mixed by hand. So I tweaked Pat_NoCal's Really Rich Banana Bread - which is fantastic(melted the butter),and added chocolate chips. Also made Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread. Although we didn't make bread - instead we made muffins. I bought enough muffin pans so that each girl could take one home, as well as cellophane bags and ribbons for the girls - so that they could nicely package their homemade goodies and give them as gifts.

The girls had a GREAT time. We divided into groups of 3 and 4 and each group made a recipe of each. The girls had great fun and by the time they got to the second recipe they were old pros! We also melted some chocolate in a ziplock - snipped off an end - and personalized our muffins! Unfortunately I couldn't get the reg. ovens to work at the community center where we held the session -but fortunately I was able to get the convention ovens to work.

I am so proud of this group (called 'Girls Group'). The volunteers involved give so much of themselves. This morning, before our sessions, the junior and senior girls were picked up by volunteers and taken for SAT and ACT prep sessions. College wouldn't have even been in the radar for these girls if it wasn't for the devotion and support of the many volunteers and contributors. And throughout the week the girls have tutoring sessions, as well as sports, book club, and so many other wonderful opportunities. And the girls are just amazing - a joy to be around. They come from such different and hard backgrounds, not to mention they are extremely poor, but they feel that this organization is a safe haven that really cares about them. I feel fortunate to be a part of it.

Jerry, my DH, joined me as my sous chef/dishwasher - he definitely had the harder of the jobs:) He was wonderful to have nearby and the staff loved having a husband/wife working together since most come from (very) broken homes.

For all of those that have contributed suggestions/recipes for these sessions - I want to give a heartfelt thanks. Even if I didn't get to use them - I want you to know that I have filed them away for future use.

Deb! Thanks so much for the update! You and your DH are doing such a wonderful thing. You have

really impacted the lives of these young girls. It must be so rewarding for you to see them progress and enjoy not only cooking, but to have aspirations. I admire and truly appreciate your efforts.

Regards,
Barb

Deb, I SO enjoy your cooking class stories! What wonderful memories you are providing

those girls.

May I ask how many there are? I think it would be neat if, say I could buy ea. one a whisk, or spatula or whatever....or several of us here could divide up and ea. buy 2, 3 or 5 of something to give to the girls thru you.

Deb, you are such a sweetheart.

What a wonderful opportunity for these girls. You have such a big heart. You are lucky to have these girls in your life and make a difference, and they are to have you in their lives. Good job Deb.

Deb, you are an inspiration to us! Great job and what a terrific idea to

have Jerry join you. What a nice role model for the girls to have the opportunity to see. I am with Marsha and Pat and would be glad to contribute something to these terrific young ladies if you like.

Love hearing about your classes, thank you for sharing with us!

Oops! (I knew I was lousy with names...

in person, but to be lousy with names on a website...oy vey).

I hope you enjoy the recipe!! (I did mention that I add mini-chocolate chips to the recipe - right:)

Deb

That would be WONDERFUL! Thank you for such amazing generosity..

The next class probably isn't until spring - but we can plan something 'together' and believe me, the girls are just tinkled pink to receive the tools of the trade. (There was leftover batter yesterday and the girls actually divided it up and were planning to bake more muffins as soon as they got home:).

Next time I get an monthly update on the organization would you like me to P.M. it to you? I'm always flabbergasted with what they do and it gives me such great ideas regarding how to help others.

BTW - today there is a very big fundraiser being held for girls group at the founder's home in Ann Arbor. I only bring this up because a very fine cook (Marcie) offered her services to do a beautiful appetizer/brunch thingee and she spent a good part of the day at Sue's (the founders) home preparing for it. After our class Sue took Na'Esha home with her so that she could be 'sous chef' to Marcie. I thought that was so lovely.

As for Na'Esah - come spring I will be taking her to two localish community colleges that have very good culinary programs to discuss requirements, financial assistance, courseload, etc. (Na'Esha is a juinor).

Pardon me...I seemed to have babbled on. Thanks for listening:)

I just love hearing or your successes in this endeavour & am so pleased to know that people

still reocgnize where they can be of such positive influence. I'm so proud of you!!

Like MargCDN just said, I'm proud of you too, Deb. Yes, would

love to be PM'd with any details and how we can go forward with sending utensils and such.

Debra and I just came up with another great idea for the cooking class. Seperate from Debra

suggesting what we all send 1 item for the next class, she'll try to plan on having a 'grab basket' for the class of smaller items we may have in our kitchen and don't want, (our friends too) that's still in good condition,.

I've already contacted my family and friends to start looking in their drawers, thrift shops, etc.

Debra said this would be such a great idea because one of the gals was so happy just to get a set of measuring spoons.

Oh BRAVO! It's never too late to teach independence, team work and the fact

that chocolate chips can be added to anything.

Sounds like both the girls AND the volunteers are getting a lot out of this. Including Jerry, who can now truly appreciate dish-pan hands.

GREAT idea. Just contacted 3 friends who are giving me cash

to buy a few utensils on their behalf. They're in awe of what you're doing and are tickled to help out and participate.
